So I made a video of my Cougar...

Mainly, to note the funny idle. Turn your bass up about 1/2way on your speakers, and listen to the exhaust when I have the camera up against the bumper.

This is with a new cap, rotors, spark plugs, and wires.. Basically, the car farts.

Warning, large video

The car does still have the original converters... I was wondering that too.

It sounds like a rattle in a cat had that happen a few years ago only time I heard the noise was at idle. Do you have to pass any emission inspection? If not dump the cats and let that motor breathe!!

Oh, the car is getting the 460 soon, I just was trying to get it running smoothly before I did the swap, so I can safely drive and sort out the body/suspension/brakes, etc.

If your cats are anything like the ones on my old 351M, they can be gutted fairly easily with a long screwdriver, so maybe try that first, but the the monolithic cats like Ford used on these cars usually don't faily unless they are overheated or bashed hard enough to crack the grid..  In any case, it's free and can eliminate one more thing.  Does the car hitch or hesitate at all while at part or light throttle cruising?

No, the car runs fine at cruise, etc. Not that I'm overly concerned, it'd just be nice to make a video to be able to sell the engine before hand without that noise, something I could show someone and say "see? this engine did run well when I pulled it".  That was my main concern.

Well, you can try gutting the cats, but also try introducing a tiny vacuum leak (pull a hose not related to engine function and pinch it, but not all the way) to see it that raises the idle a smoothes it out.  (speaking of that, have you tried a 900 or 950 rpm idle?)

You can also try one of those spark indicators, that shows when a cylinder fires and when it doesn't, try it on all 8, at a low idle, if it's one cyl, it should be pretty clear which one.  Have you eliminated the EGR and other emissions stuff as causes?

Jim, now we're getting too deep into this engine ;-). It's coming out in a few weeks when the parents go away for 12 days (most people have parties... I have an engine swap party). The most I've done to it is a fuel filter, plugs, wires, a cap and rotor.

instead of a spark indicator, I'll try the time-tested screwdriver-against-the-alternator-trick. If it's different cylinders, It's probably not internal. Come to think of it, my 75 H/O used to do that noise, although not as much, and even my 93 Cavalier isn't 100% smooth (cam swap aside).

More likely than anything, the car probably needs to be DRIVEN.. It's sat idle for the past 10 years, and even then only with 75K miles. If the weather cooperates, I'll take it to work tomorrow.

Italian tune up!!
(FWIW, I read in an owners manual for an early 70's Mercedes 280 with the 4.5l V8 that they recommended running the car hard to maximum RPM in the lower two gears every once and while to keep things in tune)

:-)
Enjoy

Yah, I've heard that from more than one person.. Actually, I heard go 60 MPH, then drop it into 2nd, and watch the carbon/etc blow out the exhaust.
