propane torch and a putty knife.. or a heat gun in lieu of a torch.
The residue will come off with liberal amounts of brake kleen. Keep the brake kleen away from the torch!

Don't ever try to grind it off, no matter how dry it appears. You will be deeply sorry. Trust me.

i've used a die grinder with wire wheel but it makes a mess but sometimes it's easier then trying to scrape it all. I do try to scrape off what I can but in some areas scrapers just don't work too good and that is where the power tools come in handy

i "ground" mine off with a drill and a wire wheel. the stuff is tar... it was obliterated but alot of the particles stuck to my face and would NOT come off. i walked around for a week looking like a reverse raccoon. (because i was wearing safety glasses) but it got the job done.

torch and a putty knife, the stuff melts right off, if your not careful you will catch it right on fire. its messy stinky and not a fun job no matter how you do it.

TO be honest....... if it's been on for 30 years, and there is no rust at the seams, I can't see removing it.

Has anyone ever removed the undercoating only to find hidden rust(under the undercoating)? Just trying to come up with a plan before I even think of doing this....I understand that rust "could" form from the other side that is not "coated" I don't want to do a frame off restoration(at least not now or in the fore seeable future), but I do want to do as much as possible to protect and preserve everything. |

You can usually tell where rust would be under 30 year old undercoating. Look for 'bubbling'. Or rust at the seams of the panels. That's where it would be.
I'll get flak for it (Cough Andy Cough) but I did a quick look for major rust and then just blasted everything with undercoating. I only Zero Rust (like POR15) coated things that bolt on, like suspension components. |
