What is the maximum cid that you can bore a Windsor small block
out to before causing problems of one kind or another? |

which one, the 302 or 351?
For a 302, I think it's 347cid, for a 351. it should be 427 cid. If you get an aftermarket block with a big bore, you can make a 454cid

That's really cool. Thanks for the info!
The 78 Bronco that I had was a 351 that had been bored out to 410. |

a stock 302 with a 4" bore and a 3" stroke makes 301.6 cubic inches
.030" oversize bore makes 306.1 cubic inches
.060" oversize makes 310.7 inches
for giggles IIRC Tim Meyer took one out to .125" over which makes 320.7" as long as the block didn't suffer enough core shift during casting to cause the machining to break out through the side of the cylinder wall or leave it too thin to use
boring alone does not increase the displacement significantly, that is where adding more crankshaft throw(stroke) comes in
stroker 302's are pretty much max'd out at 347
stroker 351W's go 427 maybe a little more but it gets $ and reliability suffers
also, consider that the stock Windsor heads don't hold their own @ stock displacements, increasing the size of the engine under the 'restrictor plate heads' only makes the situation worse. the ports in the stock Windsor heads just don't flow enough air for performance use, mostly on the exhaust side. sure, improvements can be made but why not start with a head that wants to RUN? |
