72 GTS with stock 302-V2.  all original under the hood with the exception of belts, hoses, battery, etc.
I had a meeting this evening about 15 miles from the house and drove my Torino.  When I shut it off, it immediately ejected roughly a pint of coolant out of the radiator overflow.  The drive home was uneventful and coolant level looks normal.  It did this one other time not long after I bought her.  That time it was a 100+ degree day and I had run her something north of 50 miles at highway speeds.  This time is was a breezy 80 degrees.  I was pushing her hard on the way to the meeting.  Nice straight country highway was just begging for it. LOL  But, I am now concerned.  What could be causing this?
Thanks,
Mike

Could be as simple as a bad radiator cap or a thermostat hanging up. Does it have a fan clutch or a fixed bladed fan? I only have had a bad thermostat once, it puked out coolant but it also caused a collapsed radiator hose. Todd

I agree on the cap as I am currently dealing with the same issue on the Elcamino I just picked up. I have the new cap going on tomorrow and that should do it. Wink

If you have a little bit of time.
Rent a radiator pressure tester from autozone.
Remove the radiator cap and install the tester.
Leave the car idling until it reaches normal temperature.
Check the reading, it shouldn't be much, from memory, the radiator cap open at 7 psi.
You should not go over that reading. Then stop you car and see if pressure rises up.
If not or very little, you're cap is good for the garbage :)

72 Torino w/ 302 calls for a 13psi cap

and IIRC 72's didn't have any overflow reservoir ?

so a little peeing on the ground is perfectly normal, all cars used to do it. if you don't like it peeing on the ground you can install an overflow reservoir

Fords without the overflow bottle run with the fluid level about 2 inches below the neck. In fact, the factory radiators have a marking on them for cold fluid levels. If you fill the radiator to the neck, it will rid itself of excess fluid going through the heating/cooling cycles - either out the overflow tube onto the ground or into an overflow bottle. Using the overflow container will allow the displaced antifreeze to be drawn back into the radiator after cooling. That is why a system that has an overflow container will always look full (radiator) when you remove the cap. Without it, the fluid level in the radiator will be about 2-3 inches below the filler neck.

For my overflow tank I used an empty 'fog juice' container (used in those little Halloween fog machines). It's shorter than a regular gallon jug and fits perfectly under the hood. The purple color also looks kinda' cool and custom under there. Hehe.

i used an empty antifreeze bottle wedged up in front & zip tied in place. the minorly important detail is that the tube from the radiator needs to go darn near to the bottom of the container but not quite all the way. i made a hole in the antifreeze cap tight fitting for the tube, then a small air bleeder hole so the container wouldn't suck & expand
