A numerical 1 is 2.50 open rear
There is no letter "I" that I'm aware of. Maybe it's a T? which is 2.47? Here's a chart for reference: Conventional......Lock......Ratio 1.............J.........2.50 2.............K.........2.75 3.............L.........2.79 4.............M.........3.18 ('78), 2.80 ('69-'72) 5.............N.........3.07 ('75-'78) 2.83 ('69-'70) 6.............O.........3.00 7.............P.........3.40 ('73-'78) 3.10 ('69-'70) 8.............Q.........2.73 ('78) 3.20 ('69-'70) 3.18 ('72) 9.............R.........3.25 A.............S.........3.50 B.............T.........2.47 ('78) 3.07 ('69-'72) C.............U.........3.55 ('72) 3.08 ('69-'70) D.............V.........3.91 E.............W.........4.30 F.............X.........2.33 ('70) G.............X.........3.55 ('73-'78) H.......................3.78 ('72) Y.......................3.08 ('78) 4.11 lock ('72) |

I would love a 2.47 for the trip to Carlisle!
That thing would just CRUISE on the highway! Imagine idling at 75MPH in OD? Bet I would have to spend some time shifting the AOD manually!

My 77 had 2.47s with the 460 when I got it.
3K @ 80 MPH. 60 was 2100 I think. The car was pretty lazy until 65 MPH, lol. It still wasn't all THAT hot on gas.. 13.5 MPG was the best I could ever achieve with it combined backroads/highway.

constant lugging in ultra low rpm's doesn't make for good efficiency
there's probably a break-even gear somewhere a little higher that would allow the engine to 'run' a little more and give the same MPG,
maybe even slightly better depending upon how much city vs highway?
a cam, intake & carb specifically selected for low RPM use could bring more gains Edited by Rockatansky - 20-December-2012 at 9:19AM |

I don't know much about ratio ,but the ltd gets 18 to 20 at 65-70 with 2.47's and about 10-12 short hops the window sticker states over all 13-15 mpg. I was told that325 with aod would be about the same highway better in city.I was also told block off egr valve it would be better not got worse.

if the carb & ignition are set up for EGR and it's working, that's what'll work best until you make all the necessary changes
3.55 gear gone to the chipper Comp does a 252 cam too, they have a profile for a 240 'taxi cam' but it's not listed any more
Offy made Dual Port intakes for Cobra-Jet heads, did Edelbrock ever make an SP2P for 460? |

I think so. Mine was a Performer with a 750 Holley. This engine made its way over to my F100. My truck has had 4 engines/drivetrains in it.. small blocks with 2.75, big blocks with 3.5s.. 3.25s.. etc.
ALL were 9- 11 MPG. Unreal, lol. |

All about the Giddy Giddy Gitty up and go not milage for me.... Just turned 73k original one the the cougar and 3k on the new 434.
I think while lower rpms maybe save your rings a happy axle ratio that runs your motor setup at its best will give you better mpg. |

The Ranchero I just got rid of was idling at highway speeds. It didn't care much for inclines while in overdrive but it was a stock 302 with a 600 holley and headers. I had to keep it in drive unless I was on the interstates.

Pfffft! Gas mileage? I can barely afford to drive this thing even on the weekends. But, I asked for it, didn't I... Fun to drive, though, and gets many looks, especially with the baby strapped to the grille, hehe.
