My wagon's exhaust system exits right behind the driver's side rear wheel. This is the only one I've seen like this. November 1972 build. Originally a 302 car. Is this where it supposed to dump?

1972 and early 1973 exited on the left directly behind the rear wheel. Ford moved it to the right side out towards the bumper on later '73-up in order to get it away from the fuel tank and lessen the fumes entering the rear compartment. I'm dumping my duals out on both sides right behind the rear wheels (mine was on the left originally, but the original owner had it run to the right after a little concern about gas dribbling out on the hot exhaust when gassing it up).

It appears my exhaust system is stock then. I think I'll just add another pipe on the other side exactly like this one. Thanks for the info!

I'm a lil late to the party, but my 75 wagon had an oval exit pipe that I replicated with the new chrome oval exhaust tip exiting behind the rear passenger side . My Dad's 73 wagon's exhaust also exited at the same place, but had a round pipe. I wonder in size of engine had something do with it??? Interesting?? Confused

My mom's '72 Squire had the 400 and the exhaust exited on the left. Mine has the 429 and the original exhaust exited on the left. Walt's 302 '73 model has the left exhaust exit. I know 1974-up had the right rear exit for fumes and tank safety. Funny how mounting an exhaust pipe right below the gas filler was ok back then.

Another '73 Gran Torino wagon. Forum member. Judging by Joe's info, this car must be late.

Easy to tell factory mounting is to look underneath for the old brackets or mounting hardware. If you are there in person, that is. Also, these wagons tended to deteriorate more rapidly at the exit area of the exhaust. Ask me how I know that...

I guess mine isn't rusty there because it's always been a southern car?

It also had to do with the placement of the pipe as well. If it extended past the body and the car had lower miles, tuned properly, etc it didn't rot. However, if it exited before the outer panel, ran rich, damaged, was constantly blasted by pre-converter exhaust, the acids ate it away faster than Cartman at a buffet.

That explains it. My car was only driven 35k miles in 7 years, and probably ran correctly for that entire time.
