Hi,

I'm reading for days articles about engine oils and get more and more uncertain, what viscosity I should use. Geek

What oil do you use for driving around town?

If this forum is like most others, this thread will go pages and pages with people debating synth  vs dino and what brand is garbage and which are gold, or that they heard about a guy that ran synth in an old car that caused the diff to start leaking and the brakes pulled to the left, but when he put Rotella in everything got better and all the rust disappeared....

So that said,  I'll start Wink

I'm a 10W30 Synthetic guy in all my vehicles unless it calls for something different (My 2011 V10 Trition in my motor home uses 5w30).  Many people are moving to 5w30 on newer engines.  Stick with a major brand and you will be fine.

10w30 Valvoline VR1 black Synth (has zinc) or if the engine is tired, 15w50 mobil 1, has zinc.

FWIW, I run 15w-40 diesel rated oil. I may even try diesel rated 5w-40 synthetic on the next change. Been very satisfied with the 15w-40 thus far.

For a standard street style engine with bearing clearances to match, 10W-30 is fine.  Thicker if the engine is old, or has larger bearing clearances.

I prefer full synthetic once the engine is broken in and has some miles on it.

Diesel oil used to be acceptable for flat tappet engines, but no longer has enough zinc, etc. to get the job done.  You need an oil specifically made for flat tappet gasoline engines.  I like Valvoline VR-1, but there are others available from Edelbrock, Joe Gibbs, etc.  There are even cheap store brand oils now made for older flat tappet engines.  Some cam manufacturers offer additives for use with regular oil too.  Worst case, add a bottle of STP to regular oil, as it has enough additives to get you into the safe zone.

I run Motorcraft 15W40 in my 351C, I wouldn't consider anything else but a diesel oil for an older engine. They need the zinc.

I used to exclusively use Chevron Supreme 5W40 back in the day. Can't find it now, but there are diesel 5W40's out there and for a colder climate they sound good to me. Don't need that in TX though...

We have bit different oils here in Europe and nobody specifies the ZDDP content of the oils. But phosphorus is given. I've found  Mobil Super™ 2000 X1 10W-40, which has phosphorus level of 1440 ppm. I'll try that.

I run 10w-30w in both of my 460 powered rancheros and I use the zinc break-in (lucas brand) 1/2 bottle with each oil change.
