Neat information. Not sure I would consider the Hornet an intermediate though...

Thanks for posting, I love reading these old articles! I agree that the Hornet was in the compact not an intermediate. |

That is a great article. I'm glad that the Torino made a good showing.
Personally, I have always liked the Sportabout. Nice lines, very cool with the X package and a 304. Also made the AWD Eagle in that same bodystyle. |

I wouldn't consider the Hornet a midsize either. IIRC you have the Concord in between the Hornet and Eagle.

Concord was just a re-naming of the Hornet with some minor trim changes and square headlights. Eagle was the same car with 4WD.

Don't like how they used "Grand" Torino in the specs part 2. Also, why were they measuring such a wide variety of engine options against one another? Like a 318 will look good for anything when compared to a 454.
Great article, and thanks for posting it! Always love reading them and critiquing them as well. |

That was the part of the article that didn't make sense to me. First of all, AMC had a Matador wagon...
...and Chevrolet had several engine options. http://www.automobile-catalog.com/make/chevrolet_usa/chevelle_malibu_2gen/chevelle_malibu_2gen_wagon/1973.html http://www.automobile-catalog.com/make/chevrolet_usa/chevelle_malibu_2gen/chevelle_laguna_2gen_estate/1973.html That's 307/350 engines for Chevelle Malibu wagons. The Laguna Estate was allegedly only available with 350 engines that year, no 307's, and I'm not sure where the 454 came in, maybe late availability, but it's not shown in the 1973 wagons brochure except on the Impala/Caprice models. A better comparison would have had a four barrel 360 in the Coronet, four barrel 350 in the Laguna/Chevelle, 351C in the Torino, and a Matador wagon with the four barrel AMC 360. Or for economy wagons, Chevy 307, AMC 304, Dodge 318, and Ford 351W. I'm not sure the 302 was available in wagons until 75-76 after the fuel crunch. Edited by occupant - 30-October-2013 at 12:05AM |

302 was the standard engine in Squires and Sports. Others came standard with the 250 (1972). Not sure about 1973.

According to our site, you could get a 250 in '73.
