I recently purchased a 1977 LTDII with a 351 V8 and am trying to determine whether it is a 351W or 351M. The engine sticker has been damaged and all I can read is the 351. Is there any other way to tell? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Count your valve cover bolts...I THINK the small block has six bolts, and I'm almost positive the 351M has eight.

No problem! So what's the verdict...W or M? My first midsize was a '77 T-bird with a Windsor (hard to believe that was 20 years ago!)...sure was no slouch, but wasn't an asphalt-ripper, either. Then about 10 years ago I bought my 2nd LTD II with a Modified, and it was actually two tenths quicker in the quarter mile than my Torino was with its original 400! Moral of the story: they're both good engines, IMO. Pat |

Hi Pat-
Sorry it took so long to get back on the forum. Turns out I have a 351W in my 77 LTDII, without your help I might still not know that. After a new cam, 4BBL carb, headers and dual exhaust she smokes 'em pretty good for the big old ride that she is. I've had lots of fun this summer cruising around in it and my kids can't believe how big everything inside seems.
Take care and thanks again for your help!
Bernie

Also, the thermostat goes into the intake on the Windsor, and the block on the Modified. That's what I look at.
