so i bought a 72 q code sport barn find. has a factory 72 ram air setup on it.  i think its original to the car, but my car was built 6/72, and i thought this was an early option only.  anyone on the forum have one and can share the build date info?

I also heard that factory setups were only installed in late 1971. Great find though, saw the picture on Facebook.

I have always read it as an early date cars were the only ones that got it. Maybe it was a dealer install but I am not sure if that would show on the Marti. My car had a couple dealer installed options which show up on my original invoice but not on my Marti Report.

The reason the original owner of my '72 Squire had this documentation was that he had family members in Ford management and had requested special options on the wagon. Specifically, since he always had muscle/sports cars and was going to pull a boat he wanted 4 options that were not slated for the wagon (I have the original dealer write-up sheet posted). Those were the Sport hood, Ram Air, 351 4V and the 4 speed. The dealer tried to order the car that way a few times, but even with the family influence, it was rejected (Ford's reasoning was if he rejected the car, it would not sell). He settled for the 429, HD suspension, HD C6 and before delivery replaced the 3.00 Trak Lok with a dealer-installed 4.10 Trak Loc.

Interesting Ford history.

I had thought about building that car out of a certain red 6 cylinder three speed wagon............

Here is the hood pic I keep talking about, although it may appear I am full of hot air. Ok this is a 6/72 car, ordered by a ford executive( it was) RamAir unit was placed inside trunk upon delivery. Still on the line they had to know this in order to put unit in trunk. This underside pic of the hood shows the seal wear mark through the paint, and in the center is a big chalked 'R' . I am thinking to let the line guys know not to put the block off plates in the scoops. Anyone else have an R on their hood?

Very nice find and what a nicely equipped car!  Hope you post the project on here, I am looking forward to following it.  I'd bet if this was ordered by a Ford Executive, he might have been able to get them to throw a left over Ram Air assembly in the trunk, or at the very least order the parts separately and have the dealer install it.

I am very curious to see what the Marti says...

It was ordered by a ford executive, I have the Marti and it says A plan right on it. I know the original owners name, and he worked as an engineer for ford for over 30 years. I will end up making a build thread and post more pics on it once I get my S**T together!   I am still in the middle of my 70 Torino cobra restoration when this car fell in my lap!

Very cool history Pete.  Does the Marti show it being optioned with Ram Air?

Any other goodies show up on the Marti, Rallye Equipment Option group, competition suspension, traction lok, etc?

Thanks for posting.  Looks like it had all the performance essentials.  Interesting the Ram Air didn't show up, which makes me believe that it was a dealer installed item.

Maybe you'll come across the build sheet during the tear down.

I would think it should show up on a Marti report.  I know the build sheets have a couple of boxes that specify the air cleaner, so I would think if it's a factory install it should be reflected in those boxes.

is that the highest level Marti ?

for a Ram Air / exec car I would go for the Elite or whatever they call it

The Deluxe Report is what shows all that info. The Elite option gives you the Deluxe report  plus a copy of your window sticker, door tag, and the personalized production info.

For this car, I'd have done the Elite....the window sticker should answer the question being asked here. But you can order the window sticker and the personalized production sheet separate too.

I agree. The window sticker will show everything added to the car - both factory and dealer installed. The Marti report will not.

Joe I don't think that's correct.  The window sticker only shows what was on the car as built by the factory and does not include any dealer installed options.  It kind of makes sense, because how does the factory know what the dealer is going to install?

I have all the original paper work on my car, and a Marti.  My car has a couple of dealer installed options and they only show up on the original bill of sale.  They are not shown on the window stick, Marti Report, build sheet or other factory documents.  Since the car was ordered by my dad, I know that all my documents are correct as he ordered the car new and selected all the options.

My conclusion is he got it at the time of sale, over the counter if you will.    Obviously has been on the car since day one. Plumbing for vac motor all looks factory too. The dealer it was purchased at, is still in Dearborn and they still really cater to the ford employee crowd. I am still trying to track down the original owners family, maybe that can shed sone light on it.

I just completed the restoration on my 72 GTS. I was the first to disassemble this car. Even the sill plates had NEVER been removed. The first thing I did after removing the sill plates was removing the back seat which had NOTHING underneath it from the original owner and looked like it had never been removed. Next I pulled back the rear carpet, and sitting right on top of the sound/vibration material was a tally sheet of some kind showing some molding adjustments that the car needed at final QC. Thats the only item it ever found. NO BUILD SHEET ANYWHERE!Cry

Guys, I pulled a '72 GTS Formal apart several years ago and finally found a build sheet in the front seat seatback. Since the material was toast, I cut open the seatback and found it attached to the seatback springs. You probably have one there as well.

That is my suspicion too, since that option should not have been available at the time this car was produced.  If that dealership still exists, any chance they might have any documentation, like a bill of sale or service records?  I am sure it's a long shot, but might be worth checking.

it's been suggested on good authority that the factory Ram Air option was only available on a 351C-2V

it was an emissions issue with the 4V Cobra Jet

I ordered a'72 GTS with Ram Air and it was delivered mid-April 1972.  It had every option that was available for the 351C 4V CJ engine and auto trannie. Don't know if the ram air came in the trunk or installed.   Once I replaced the crappy OEM Firestone tires (recalled by Firestone after I sold them) with Michelins and was sure that everything was working as designed I was clocked at 143MPH on a two mile course.   I put over 250,000 miles on it with no engine or transmission work necessary.   Yellow with a black vinyl roof.  Love to find that car and restore it.
