I know it's a Cleveland, but on the back of the block behind the driver's side head, the # on the block is 3A202817. What does this number mean? Thanks

sounds like you found a partial VIN, some blocks got stamped to the original vehicle / many didn't

if it is a partial VIN,

3=1973
A=Atlanta assy plant

if the first 2 is really a 3 it comes back to a Torino body and the remaining 02817 is the line sequence #?

otherwise i can't find any 2 or 20 body code

Yeah I looked it up like a normal VIN, but got stumped at the "20", also. Doesn't conform to any Ford body style I can find.

The whole engine is kind of a mystery. It has 400 heads on it, according to the numbers stamped on them (D5AE-A2A) but came out of a 73 GTS I parted. I assume the engine was replaced with something else over the years, but why put the 400 heads on? Has Cleveland exhaust manifolds by the #, and it was a 2V intake.

"why put the 400 heads on?"
Because
1. They were available.
2. Pretty much the same as open-chamber 2V heads.
3. They fit and work fine.

They might also be off a 351M as they used the same heads as 400 in any given year.

the D5 casting code dates them as production model year 1975, those are the heads with the water jacket invading the exhaust port and they may have A.I.R passages plugged in the rear? surprisingly if the rest of the combo supports it they're capable of making over 400 maybe 425 hp

anything D5 i just call them 351M heads because that was the first year for the 351M

but yup like BB says it's pretty common to find them on a 351C-2V

==================

and on that note, be careful adding any kind of aftermarket or even stock 351C cam to those heads w/o having them checked / re-worked for additional lift. Bubba's page documents a warning about anything near or over .480 lift

Still don't know what I'm going to do with this engine sitting on my garage floor, but thanks for the info. I'll pull the heads off soon to take a closer look at the guts, and maybe that will help me decide whether to keep it for a possible rebuild, or just get rid (sell) of it.

If its got 400 heads on it it'll be a turd.....low compression and horrible....would just sell it off unless you want to find some cheap closed chamber heads and rebuild it to flip

a couple or more recent builds have lifted my opinion of the turd heads somewhat, they'll make 400 / 425hp with the right combo, not bad for junkyard boat anchor doorstops?

with your 72 & 73 can't you use a back up short or long block for a time when you think you'd like to fresh one of those?

or just use it as a complete swappy after a proper do-over?

Actually that's kinda the way I'm leaning. I know the heads in my 72 are correct, so simple rebuild on the spare block, swap heads and off I go. Maybe recoup some of the $ by selling the 75 heads.

I'm even thinking of a Cleveland swap into my 2003 CVPI, make it run off all the original fuel & electronics, emissions compliant & tune through an SCT handheld. not sure what to do about the E-auto trans though, i'd probably go to a C6 if it'd fit under the car rather than an adapter, maybe a Mustang manual trans ECM?
