I have received the mech.  It was a very close fit, put not quite perfect.

While it was fitted to the frame I cut it into 4 pieces and joined it with sticky tape.  Then I went around all the edges with a black felt pen so it would scan well, here is the result:

Then I had to hack up the scan of the original circuit to fit the new shape. The differences are subtle, put it will make the fit perfect:

Now I can start tracing.  So far I've done the mask:

This is where it is at right now, finished 'board', finished mask just a lot of copper tracing to do:

Just curious.  I absolutely want and believe I need this circuit board.  My dash is dead except the speedometer and gas gauge and I really want to move the gauges that were mounted in the center dash back to the dashboard with this.  My concern/question is... if the previous owner added the gauges do you think I can bring the dash back to life with this?  Additionally, what, if anything, do I need to make this work?  Thanks in advance.

there is a voltage regulator on the back of the cluster but if the gas gauge is reading correctly i'd think it's ok, i believe it runs the gas, oil, and temp.

On a somewhat related subject.  If some of the dash lights are burnt out would that effect anything else?  I mean, if a bulb isn't working could it/would it potentially result in an incomplete circuit thereby preventing other lights or components, i.e., temp, oil pressure, or amper gauge, from working?  I'm probably going to go with the LED upgrades, if you think they'll work, with the circuit board.

The impedance of the globe elements will not effect the operation of any of the other elements on the circuit.

Or in other words if one or more bulbs were blown(open circuit) or one of more bulbs were replaced with LEDs(below standard current draw) the operation of the gauges and other warning lamps will not be affected.

However, the bit I cannot see by looking at the circuit is where the power for the instrument illumination comes from. If it is like the Australian Fords of the same period there will be a facility to dim the lighting and that dimmer is a rheostat.  Replacement LEDs typically draw much less current than the original incandescent bulb so what you may find is that the dimmer does not work like it did because the load is significantly less than what the dimmer is designed for.

Did the Torino come with a dimmer for the instrument illumination?

Posted By: Rockatansky
Date Posted: 07-May-2018 at 9:50PM
Yes instrument lamp rheo is built into the headlamp switch,

makes sense that the dimmer may not be calibrated to load with LED's

maybe a ballast?

Looks awesome Neil!  This looks to be better quality than OEM.  Have you considered talking to Auto Krafters or another part supplier to see if they'd carry this product?  I am not sure what kind of production capacity you have, but with that Auto Krafters looking for new 1972+ Torino parts it might be worth talking to them.

Neill and Andy,
Got mine in the mail yesterday and thank you.  The packaging alone (slipped in the piece of wood to firm up the package) was a testimony to the care you guys took in this project.  The quality of the PCB was phenomenal!  I laid them side by side and could see how well this one was made compared to the factory one.  I am absolutely confident that I will get at least 46 years out of this.  What it also did was confirm the last owner(s) did some wiring stuff and that my gauges are dead.  Oh well, one more thing to add to the punch list.  Thanks again guys, great job!

FOLOW THESE DIRECTION TO CHECK instument Voltage Reulator
THE BASICS

Even though it probably doesn't seem like it to someone who's having problems with their fuel level gauge, these are actually very simple electrical devices. Understanding how they work makes it much easier to diagnose problems. Here's how the fuel gauge works:

The fuel gauge circuit consists of the sending unit in the fuel tank, the gauge in the dash, and the wiring and dash wiring (or circuit board) between them. As with most sensors, the tank sending unit is simply a variable resistor. Its function is to resist the flow of current from the ground to the gauge depending on the position of the float within the tank. The higher the fuel level, the higher the float raises, which decreases the resistance between gauge and ground. The more current that flows through the meter, the higher the gauge needle moves.

Fig. 5

The sending unit operates off a 5-volt pulse supplied by the instrument panel voltage regulator (IPVR, Fig. 5), so just running a 12V hot wire to the unit won't work, and in fact, will fry the sending unit. See Fig. 6 for the typical location on the backside of the instrument panel.

Fig. 7 - '67-'69 vs. '70-'72 style regulator. The later style was for use with a printed circuit board. (click to enlarge)

You can test the IPVR without pulling the instrument cluster. Tilt the seat forward and pull off the orange wire from the fuel tank sending unit. When you probe the connector, your test light should flash on and off. You can also do the same test under the hood. Pull off the sender wire from the temperature sender and/or the oil pressure sender and probe those connectors...they should flash too.

Sorry if this is redundant, or a dumb question, but I gather you are making and selling new circuit boards for the instrument cluster on 72-73 GTS? Are they all basically the same cause I had been looking at some used clusters and noticed some are a different lay out than mine. Perhaps it's just the guages are differently positioned. Will the circuit boards be the same ?

After posting that, I started to wonder if the instructions were lifted from a truck with the tank behind the seat.

I'm good with it either way. Struck me as odd on first read, then thought about trucks with the tank in the cab...
Probably a necessary step for them.

Just curious if there are any more 72-73 dash PCBs still available. Have discovered that my original has a broken circuit. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

i will double check with Neill
i think he may have one that had a blemish
NO THING that would affect the circuits - but he's very picky on product he sells
