I have seen lots of warnings about the Distributor Shaft dropping out when the Oil Pump is removed. Does anyone have a written or video way to avoid problems when replacing the Oil Pump?

if you have the pan off changing the pump... i wouldn't worry about it, there's a round keeper washer looking thing on the shaft that keeps it from pulling the shaft up and out when changing the distributor. all you need to do is put the shaft back in the pump as you put the pump back up into place! if you are changing the pump... i'd recommend putting in a new pump drive shaft too!!!! they are hex shaped and can wear on the corners like a stripped bolt head with the load of a new pump against it! new shaft= cheap insurance!!! Wink

Yes there's a wagon wheel axle clip thang on the Oil Pump Drive Shaft (OPDS) that prevents the OPDS from coming up & out with the dizzy, unless some brilliant genius took it off to be smarter than Henry (Ford)

what i've done in the past is flip the OPDS end for end and move the clip accordingly, this changes the contact drive point to the unworn sides of the hex

but the OPDS is supposed to come out with the oil pump, the oil pump is all that holds it in from the bottom, the clip keeps it from coming out the top. just put the OPDS into the hex receiver on the oil pump and get the top end back where it belongs, which will be into the bottom of the dizzy if you didn't remove it or just into the dizzy pilot hole in the block if you did ... retaining washer clip to the top!

what engine?

351 C 2V and thanks. It's got 81K original miles on it and I have the Pan off now. Not sure if I need to replace it.

Just a warning. 12 years ago I was going for installing a new oil pump and a clutch.

It turned into this...…..………….

If you have visible wear on the oil pump driveshaft, replace it. check to make sure the shaft isn't twisted as well. Especially with 302 as they are smaller.
