Is a 72 Mark IV rearend identical to a Torino rearend?

Specifically  are the axle lengths the same?  How about the small axle bearings the  72 Torino has?

i don't think the small bearings made it to the end of the 72 production year,

i had to reference the D1xx part number on the seal to a 1971 Mustang to get the small diameter seals for my 72

The '72 Mark VI rear axle assembly has a 9 3/8" center section, 31 spline small bearing axles, 11" drum brakes(these can be sold for $$, small bearing big drums and 5 on 4.5" bolt circle) and it will bolt right into a '72 to '79 intermediate. I have one under my '79 Ranchero, but it has some "goodies" in and/or on it. Biggest issue is finding ring and pinion gears and carriers, no aftermarket support for these.

The '72 Mark IV housing uses the same rear suspension and upper/lower control arms as a '72+ intermediate and it was a direct bolt-in for my Ranchero, I found this as a positive kind of surprise.

Rock, do not feel so all alone, I am almost always in the state of confusion Confused. LOL

The axle will bolt right in. Drum brake cars are "usually" a 9", and disc brakes 9 3/8".
If you get a 9 3/8", 9" center chunk should bolt right in, as the 9 3/8" center bolts into a 9" with minor clearancing.
73-76 non-disc rears from Tbird or Mark IV will bolt in and have bigger drums and the 5x5 pattern if you want to use fullsize front rotors and wheels.

Randy,
Not trying to be argumentative but...…. In all my years of junkyard "raiding" and online research, I have never seen or come across a factory rear disc brake 9 3/8" axle assembly, all were drums.  I am certain you already know the 9" assemblies came factory equipped with disc brakes in certain Lincolns, Mercurys and '75-'76 T-birds, but never a '72-'79 intermediate(Mark's and Versailles' are not considered intermediates).

I was under the impression that they were using the 9 3/8 rear for disc/ABS due to axle chatter interfering with the early ABS (73-74). I knew they had the 9" bugs worked out for the Versailles/ Mark V, but thought they were still screwing with the 9-and-change through 75-76.
Versailles was a tarted-up Granada (66-69 Falcon family) and has nothing in common with the 72-79 intermediates.
Whether or not Ford/Lincoln considered them intermediates, Mark IV/V and 72-76 Thunderbird are a variation of the 72-79 intermediate. They use the same basic frame, just lengthened (4-door wheelbase) with the same suspension, axles etc. Body construction on these is something we would all be familiar with.

The last year for the 9 3/8" center section was the '72 model year(from what info I have gathered or seen with my own eyes). My '72 Mark VI differential had the anti-skid brake system parts in place when I pulled it, in fact the tone ring is still there on the pinion.
  The 9 3/8" rear assemblies were installed between '65 and '72, I have found them in full size cars and F100 trucks(I got a 9 3/8" 4-pin Trac-lok case from a '71 F100).
