The power steering box is not that difficult to rebuild, I just recently did it for my 1970 Torino GT Convertible. There is a video on how to do it on YouTube. The video is by Deome's garage. He is French Canadian and speaks in a strong accent, but you can understand him. He is rebuilding a 1967 Mustang Steering box, but the disassembly and assembly procedures are exactly the same.
I rebuilt my power steering box C60R 3550-A from this video and the parts I sourced on Ebay and on the web. This box is the same for power steering and manual steering applications. Since the Torino evolved from the Fairlane, I researched 1966 Fairlane steering gear box parts and found both the upper and lower seals. on ebay. The upper rubber seal is the same as a 1967-1970 Mustang input shaft($6), and the lower grease seal was C70Z-3591-A, also from a Mustang($8), but was NOS.
The needle bearings I sourced from Ebay as well. The serial number was stamped on the bearing and was part number; Kaydon KN 182216. They were $15 dollars each. The steering worm bearings were sourced online from the Falcon Enterprises website. The part number was C2AZ-3571-A these were the best prices I could find as Ebay wanted $65 a bearing, I got mine for $29 each. The falcons used the same bearings in their steering boxes as well, so there was no problems. Some of the these parts may say they are for manual steering , but like I said earlier I found with mine, they are the same for both.
I did not replace the steering block bearings as they were in good shape. I just regreased them. The top gasket can be sourced from a mustang parts company like CJ Pony parts or NPD, but I just bought some gasket paper and cut my own out for $4, which less than the mustang stores, however, if you do not want the home version, the store bought can be bought. The grease was bought from the local Autozone, it is the same grease used for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury applications by Valvoline. Make sure you pack it very well. I found that an entire can was necessary for the rebuild.
The entire project took less that two hours once you have all the parts and the box is cleaned and repainted. The video is very thorough and detailed and was easy to follow. Best of luck to you.
