Subject: HELP! Carb brackets - 351W/AOD Setup - 1976 Torino
Date Posted: 06-December-2019 at 8:39AM
The Torino is currently stuck at the shop and trying to find Edelbrock (or other) part numbers for brackets.

I have a Edelbrock #1406 carb, 351 Windsor, and AOD.

To quote the shop owner:

"We need to find out the part numbers for the needed brackets or levers to hook your throttle cable to and to hook the throttle pressure cable to for the AOD. The instruction manual  QUOTES #1483 Ford throttle lever bracket but also notes it does not work with a AOD. If your forum people have done this trans swap they should have run into the problem of the shift linkage cable not working---what did they do?"

Any/all help I can get ASAP before I call Edelbrock tech line would be great, thanks!

idk there's been discussion about the edelbrock carb... idk if there's a proper bracket for them or not??? i'm running a holley with the AOD using a lokar cable...
it's not just a kick down on an aod it must control the pressure correctly or it will burn up the tranny!!!

According to edelbrock you should use the lokar SRK-4000 bracket with the edelbrock 1406 carb and aod transmission. Holley says that this bracket will also work with the holley 4150 and 4160 carbs. But neither of them mentioned if you have to use a lokar throttle cable with that bracket.

The bracket is also available without the spring.

They also sell the spring without the bracket.

If you have questions on your application you can call the lokar general tech line at 877-469-7440 or email at mailto:tech@lokar.com" rel="nofollow - tech@lokar.com

Holley says the 20-121 bracket attaches to throttle lever of Holley model 4150/4160 carburetors. Designed For vehicles with GM 700R-4 automatic overdrive transmissions. The 20-121 should be used in conjunction with transmission kickdown / throttle cable brackets such as Holley PN 20-95 (steel) or the Holley PN 20-112 and 20-119 (aluminum) brackets.
Holley says The 20-121 is not designed for use with some early model Holley carbs, Holley Dominator, Chrysler or Ford specific throttle levers.

There is a picture below of a holley 20-121 transmission kickdown bracket on a holley carb throttle lever.

the shop owner didn't call Edelbrock?

he spent more time avoiding dealing with it than it would've taken to grab it by the horns

i'd call Lokar, that way you don't guess wrong at which part you need

https://www.lokar.com/contact.html" rel="nofollow - https://www.lokar.com/contact.html

the Edelbrock disclaimer is to avoid all mis-installation claims against failed transmissions due to incorrect or non-existent throttle valve pressure adjustments.
as Johnny said the adjustment is critical to the life of your transmission. a slightly firmer shift is better for the trans than a soft shift Wink

i should do up a vid on this with the AOD since it comes up from time to time! if the correct bracket isn't available, i could figure the dimensions and ratios off of mineWink it's not just the length of pull but the ratio from the pivot of the shaft and possibly the distance and ratio of the throttle cable to shaft as well i'm sure and the distance and ratio  from the shaft to the cable...

shop owner and myself both didn't have luck with Edelbrock tech support. Put us on hold for a while, then when I finally got to someone they said they don't make the bracket for AOD and referred me to Lokar. I ordered the Lokar kickdown kit from Summit. I found the bracket also, but the shop said the bracket wouldn't work and they'd have better luck fabricating the bracket. Not sure if that means the bracket will have any sort of adjustment? I can ask on Monday.

the instructions say to get this particular ford tool but it's hard to find! the kit should have it in there!!! then you install a pressure gauge in a port in the tranny and adjust the pull on the cable to 35PSI??? at idle then remove the tool it should be zero PSI at idle....

I ran into this years ago with my 1984 F150.
I rolled the sprag gear on a custom built AOD because I incorrectly installed the Lokar kickdown kit.

The shop will also need to have to proper OTC adjustment tool for dealing with the kickdown, or as mentioned, it will burn up your AOD.

I hate to say this, but if your trans shop does not know what they are doing, I may suggest finding a shop that knows what they are doing unless you want to deal with a toasted AOD.
Making sure the linkage is adjusted and line pressures are critical. Failure to make it right will lead to death of the transmission.

thanks for the info, they know what they're doing. They just wanted to see if any of the guys on this forum have had experience with this 351W/AOD setup with a Torino. Car isn't at trans shop. This shop does a lot of custom/fabrication work. Transmission was built and delivered to this shop so they could install correctly and modify my existing cross member to ensure proper fit. The two shops have worked closely together for several years.

here are the instructions

as far as mounting the cable to your windsor bracket here's how i mounted mine, using the throttle cable screw in the big hole of the bracket then drilled the small hole in the factory bracket Wink
