You uploaded the photo fine, I added it to your post. Nice Cyclone!

Try watching the tutorial video we have in the how to post photos thread. If you see the preview of the photo, all you should have to do is click ok and it should post in the text box.

Hi Forum Members,

just came back on the site and see that my picture finally posted.

Story on the car is it belongs to my Uncle from Vancouver, he bought the car brand new but it hasn’t been driven since 1989.

I told him if he wanted I would come down from where I live pick the car up and bring it home. I’ve been puttering away on it for a couple of months and hopefully I might have it running this week.

Cheers
Jim

Make sure it manually turns over. That is a long time for exposed cylinder walls to be sitting without protection. Cracking a piston would suck.

I’ve had the heads off and rebuilt, the engine turns over quite nicely, I also installed new timing chain and gears

For sure I’ll have my fingers crossed

Udate

I got the 429 CJ running today, started right up but wouldn’t idle down, I think a little adjustment on the carburetor will help, sounded great and had good oil pressure.

I’ve got a small  coolant leak on the water pump, hopefully not a real big fix, I dread the thoughts of having to pull the timing chain cover to fix this problem as the water pump is bolted to it.

Overall quite happy with my progress for a car that hasn’t run in thirty years

Why would you have to pull the timing chain cobec?

Posted By: Jedi
Date Posted: 20-February-2020 at 5:29PM
Apparently the aluminum timing chain covers can get corrosion on them and the water pump bolts to the cover. Hence the coolant leak is actually caused by the timing chain cover and not the water pump itself

Makes sense. Fingers crossed for ya.

if you try to tighten or loosen the bolts and it don't feel right stop! sometimes the long bolts through the aluminum cover rust and corrode  if any are you can heat the bolt up and burn out some corrosion so you don't snap a bolt off Wink

Hi There,

I got some things sorted out today, engine runs good with no coolant leaks, super throttle response.

It’s currently idling at about 1000 RPM, part of the problem is I have the timing set at about 20 BFTDC.
Tomorrow I’ll bring the timing back to 10 degrees and check the PCV, hopefully I can get the idle down to about 700 RPM

Starting to get excited about getting this old Cyclone out for a drive, hopefully in the next week or so

Cheers
Jim

Update,

I took the Cyclone out for a shakedown cruise today, it ran pretty well with no issues, well except for one.

It’s pretty loud though, I’ve ordered a new set of Proflow mufflers for it, should be here next week, right now it has an old set of burned out mufflers with no tailpipes.

I guess the one small issue is the horn doesn’t work, it has one of those horn rings that you squeeze with your thumbs on the inside edge of the wheel itself. That can be a next winter project, maybe someone can chime in if they know anything about this type of horn button.

Cheers
Jim

Most likely the horn itself is the problem. Check the fuse then unplug the wire from the horn and hook it to a test light.

Is the steering wheel cracked?

Will do, just having coffee, I’ll check that out when I get home

Thanks

The wheel does have some separation where the spoke joins the wheel, I suspect it probably doesn’t work. I have no power at the horns, didn’t check fuses, the horns don’t work as well. I ran power to the horns from the battery, with no results.

I’ll worry about another time.

Jim
