Were aftermarket sheet-metal ever made for our cars when they were newer.  I have an NOS fender, but I question If it is OEM.  It is red oxide with the part number stenciled in yellow.  It has a 1977 date also stenciled in yellow.  It does not have the service part tag I am used to seeing.

Has anybody ever seen an aftermarket panel from when these cars were newer that may have been for collision repair?

It’s not for sale I’m just curious if it is OEM.

It sounds like a Ford made replacement panel to me. I doubt an aftermarket company would go to the trouble to stencil a Ford part number. I am not sure if the aftermarket made any back then. Post a photo.

My car came with OEM fender and it was black with tag and info on inside. It was the outer skin only and we ended up cutting the rail from another donor fender and welding it together pretty much how the dealerships did it.
After watching some videos of the process when it comes to making panels, it is no surprise there are few panels available. Machines stamping a part up to five or more makes keeping the dies in good shape much harder. Then add one model year and a new tooling at the factory and the previous process is scrapped. What happened to the old dies? Only the old timers can say with any certainty, well, as best they can recall.
There was a guy on Facebook who was given 17 NOS full floors for a 72. We were trying to get one to be used as a template so they could be reproduced. These were going to be scrapped. I donremember what happened to them in the end but I suspect he sold all of them to one individual.

77-79 NOS service fenders are black, no inner apron, with a toe-tag.
part # is also written on the inside with a paintstick, but i think that was done at the dealer parts area.
