Hey guys,
I've seen a couple pics on the internet of a 73 with a fiberglass "aero" type bumper. I'm sure this was custom made... but by who? Anybody know?
If I can't get one of these I'm planning on the old cut & shrink to make the front of my gts look a little better. If any one has any leads please let me know.
Thanks Al.

Mcford,
do you know of a way to get in touch with Mr. Dohner? If so please pass the interest along.
I don't expect him to "give" them away & will be happy to buy one if he has one laying around, even one that was damaged.. I'm sure a lot of guys with 73's would love to have that bumper.
Thanks for the info & I'll keep my fingers crossed.
AL

Man... if I was him I would make a mold off that bumper & make some 73's look good. I'm still holding on that something like this "turns up"  my car is getting close to paint & looks like I might have to do the old "foose' CUT & SHRINK to it to take the big lip look off the front.

FWIW... I'm still very much alive and well! LOL!! But like Michael said.... working like an indentured servant. If not for the fact I've been laid up for the past few weeks (and will be for a few more, nursing a broken hand), I'd have close to 4000 hours in for the year. In the past few days I've finally been able to sit in front of this computer and catch up on some things that have gone untouched for a couple of years. It sucks, but it lets us live in Tennessee and still pay a mortgage in Ohio. No one ever said life would be easy, but when so many people are scraping to get by, right now, I have no room or reason to grumble. We're blessed.

As for the bumper? You don't wanna know. When we were hustling to get packed and move, we had precious little time to sift, sort and stuff an entire lifetime into the back of two U-Hauls (so help me, if I live to be 100, I NEVER want to go through that again!). The bumper, jigged up and ready for mold building, was just too much to cope with in the little time we had and my options were nil. You can fill in the gaps from there. Add to that copious amounts of various resins and other raw materials (including honeycomb), and it was truly obscene. And entirely necessary. I still have all the tools tucked safely away, and Michael is holding on to the scoop mold and one of the "proofs" that I pulled from it, for me. I still have sketches, ideas and "drive". Just need a place and time. When the day comes that we sell the property in Ohio and are able to finally buy a home down here... then we'll see what happens.

Peace...

Kevin

'72 Scoop for a '73????  '72 Scoop for a '73?!?!?!?!?!?!
I have been LOOKING for that, to the point I am considering building a mold myself (I still have a '72 hood section, in storage that I was considering either making a tool out of or getting mounted to my hood, old-school style aka welding). I have NO idea why this has not been done yet!!!
I would think that he would sell about as many scoops as there are '73s on the road today, if he finished the tool.  Just my opinion, but that would be a HOME RUN to make this scoop!  Clap
~Chris

Oh, and I love the bumper, too.  I am hoping both of these see the light of day!  SIGN ME UP!!!!!

Mike, are you trying to TORTURE me?!?!?  LOL
Seriously, it looks GREAT!  Uh, he wouldn't want to sell that scoop, would he?  It looks like it would plunk right in on my '73 hood...
I have a '72 hood section a little bigger than that, but I am not a welder. I am sure thinking hard on laying a mold from it, after seeing this one...
Carl, I did keep tabs on that thread, and it seems like the whole thing never got off the ground  Cry

Chris, by all means, if you have the place and PATIENCE... absolutely give it a try! At best, you'll have a mold and a usable part. At worst? Trust me, you'll gain a deeper appreciation of the process and the effort it takes. I'd be completely embarrassed to tell you how many hours I had in jigging up, and blocking down, the original pattern (OEM hood and scoop insert) to make it clean and completely symmetrical. As "perfect" as original sheet-metal MIGHT look at first blush? It ain't! LOL!! Keep in mind, though, I was massaging the entire hood, not just the bulge/scoop detail.
One piece of friendly advice, however... unless you're a glutton for punishment or striving for a certain degree of "completeness"... do yourself a favor and fill in the majority of the scoop nostrils. It'll make mold/part lay-up and release far easier. If you DO try to replicate it in its' entirety (shoot, even "I" filled them in 1/2"), pay close attention to draft/slip angles, as you'll have to SLIDE the part out of the mold... lengthwise... as opposed to LIFTING the part. That ALSO applies to removing the MOLD from the PATTERN! The only thing worse than getting a part stuck in the mold, would be getting the mold seized on the pattern! KWIM?

As for the remaining "finished" scoop Mike is holding for me? Sorry, man... I still have legitimate plans for it one day. One of those "Skunk Works" ideas.....

All GOOD information, THANKS.  Sounds like a labor of love on your part.  Looks like I either start my mold, or find a GOOD welder who is not too pricey.
As far as the scoop, eh, that's okay- I won't try to bribe it off Mike, as much as I would like to!  LOL  Thanks for the information, MUCH appreciated!!!!!

I didn't, but it could certainly be done. Due to the various re-entrant curves and crowns, at best it would be a two piece mold. Would probably release easier with a three piece set-up. Once you pull the finished part out, you could then slice, dice and modify it to your heart's content.

If there WOULD be an advantage to copying/modifying the OEM bumper, it would be the ability to still use the inner structure for mounting and safety. Beyond that, the fabrication factor goes up incrementally as you get into support structure and mounting provisions.

FWIW... A year ago, while I was still laid-up, healing and had time/energy to kill, I dusted off a bunch of old artwork and revisited the whole venture and spent a couple of weeks generating several revised drawings based on what I learned the first time around. What I liked/didn't like. What worked/didn't work. If I had the opportunity to do it again (and with my current job/work load... that'll probably be about 2027), it would be several inches deeper (top to bottom), have a touch more draft and the lower line would flow back to the bottom of the front wheel well arch, lowering the bottom line of that section of the front fender by a few inches and effectively creating a front "valance". Sounds involved, but would (IMHO) go a long way to improve the proportions up front and clean up the lines aerodynamically/stylistically.
