On this 73 4 door I noticed two things about the trunk area.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-OWNER-64K-ACTUAL-MILES-S-MATCHING-351-PS-PB-AC-/280850838745?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item416403b4d9#ht_21390wt_1002" rel="nofollow - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-OWNER-64K-ACTUAL-MILES-S-MATCHING-351-PS-PB-AC-/280850838745?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item416403b4d9#ht_21390wt_1002

First I noticed the trunk is finished in a grey speckle paint. Is that the factory trunk finish for all 72's as well?

Second, what the hell is with the braces at the left and right quarter panels? Is this a 73 production change or specific to 4 doors?

speckle paint from what I remember was a GM thing not  sure about Ford, that trunk is too clean for a 64K mile car and bet it was redone

I think the early cars had it. Not sure what the changeover was. My 78 and 77's both did not have it OEM.

When I redid my Cougar's trunk, I used black/green. I always liked the look.

All the 72 and 73 cars I have... have that brace.
The yellow 72 and black 73 both are original in the trunk and have speckle type paint.

My 72 fastback does not have that brace. Was it a 4 door/ 2 door formal roof piece?
Don't know which way I'll go with the painting yet but if the speckle finish was factory I'd have to consider it. Would certainly be easier to do. lol

Jeff, is that red 73 a fastback?

First time I've ever seen that brace on a '72 or '73

Trunks were grey/white speckle from factory

My '72 Formal had the brace. My '75 and '76 do not.

'75 and '76 cars I have were factory matched paint in the trunk - never had the speckle paint. Must be an early model thing.

74-76 have a different tail panel so they might have eliminated the brace
not sure why the formals have it but the fastbacks do not

For what it's worth, my 76 Elite has no braces and the trunk is painted black like the car.  Oh, and if you are wodering, those three relays are for the trailer towing package.

yah we figured it to be a 72-73 formal roof with the braces
and then the same with the spatter paint but includes the fastbacks
the later years seem to go with body color trunk floors
