Stripping a very late '72 production Q Code and noticed an oddity concerning the rear bumper. This was a loaded car produced in August of '72, 43K mile car. The rear bumper looks to be the original one, previous owner vouched for all original sheetmetal and bumpers when I bought it.
It has the '73 center strip, but '72 bumper guards, brackets, etc. I looked closely and it appears that nothing has had a wrench put on it that I can tell, and the bumper guard holes are in a different position from a '72 or a '73. Could it be that the factory just substituted it being so close to the end of the run? again, the car is a loaded version. I looked at several '73 bumpers with and without guards and they are not the same as this one. Even the rust matches, lol. I've attached 3 pictures of it, my '73 plain and my '72 bumper. '73 had larger squared bumper guards and this has factory '72 units. I even contacted Malcolm and he sent pictures of both '73 deluxe bumpers he has. Any suggestions? |

Could be an assembly line switchover to the next bumper, and maybe the original purchaser wanted bumper guards and the dealer added what was on hand... where they would fit.
It would be interesting to see if the guard mounting holes were original to the bumper or added. |

I peeked in through the slot above the bumper with a light and they look original. Will be pulling it off soon and disassemble it to see. Shame about this old car, had the window sticker with it and such low miles.

See if the chrome goes through the holes... maybe it was a part/option late 72 that just didn't click with people..

Maybe car was damaged at dealer?, or very early after purchase, wrong one used or customer wanted '73 pc. when replaced. When you take off, maybe you'll be able to see some engineering #'s.

I am betting that along the cars 40 year history, the old bumper got damaged and they just swapped out a 73.

Car was parked in 1978 plus the guard placement is different from a normal '73.

I would suspect someone on teh assembly line did what they had to in order to fill the special order fully loaded option at the time. Happened ALOT back then
