Hello, I just found this forum and thought I'd join in. I've had my '73 Gran Torino Brougham since 1981. It was my second car following my '59 Studebaker Lark which I still have also. I've been hanging out on the Stude forum for a while and hadn't thought about looking for a Torino forum before, but I'm glad I did. Checking though the posts, I came across Uante's post showing his original '73 GTB. It was a near twin to mine, so I dug further to see what else I could find. Long story short, I've found lots of cool stories and tech tips, so here I am.

Here's a couple shots of my car. The first is me at 16 shortly after getting the car in '81 just after adding the wheels.
After running the original 400 that I tuned from mid-16s to mid-14s with bolt-ons for a few years, I built a 460 that pushes the car into the mid-12s as shown in the second pic. I built a little 150 shot system and tried one full pass (starting to run out of gear at about 1000') and it still ran 11.68@115. Our track is at about 1500', so with a little less gear and sea level it might run pretty good!
The last two pics are how the car looks today, it's been through some wheel, power train and scoop changes, but overall it's the same car I went to high school, prom, graduation and my wedding in and look forward to visiting here.Cool

edited to add another pic and change subject line

Welcome to the forum.i joined in November after I bought a 73 formal roof & then found a member selling his 73 Sportroof project so I made a deal to buy it.I always wanted a Sportroof Torino but never found a deal on one and being as I'm a paint & body guy by trade I won't buy a completed car I would rather buy it cheap & build it myself and the way I liike.I have to say slots look good on Torino's,I bought some for mine 7.5X15 front and 15X10's for the rear which I will have to narrow the rear about 2.5-3 inches to get the tires inside the wheelwells but that is the look I want, deep dish slots with some fatty's on back tucked under the car. Your car looks like Uante's first Torino,I bet he'll be jealous, but his gold glow car is awesome looking too.My first Torino was originally gold like his but was painted blue & I started changing it to red but only got half done then later sanded it down and primer-sealed it gray.Wish I kept it as it had alot of rust free parts but it had a 74 nose I put on it,Miss it

Hey that does look a lot like my first '73, except for the black top and on the bottom. Sure wish I had mine still...nice job keeping your cars!

I tried to find my original, but no luck. I gave up and got the Gold GTB...at first it just wasn't the same, but it's grown on me now and I'm liking it just the way it is.

Welcome to the forum "Brougham Brother"! Thumbs Up

haha we need those two photos side by side.I never got any photos of me with my first Torino cause any pics I have of it,I was taking them.I do have a photo of the husky/shepard puppy on the hood of it though.Didn't have a girlfriend to pose for me back then,LOL. When I finish building my 73 GTS i'm goona get some photos with me & the car plus take some with a hot babe in a bikini near the water. That would make a great calendar photo and I would want it the month of June for summer & my birthday.I did get a magazine article & centerfold of a car I did the body & paint on in June 05 Mopar Muscle which was a kewl B-day present & later the owner gave me laminated placque of the article. They even used a photo of me working on the car when I was building it in the article. If you search my threads you'll find photos of my first Torino.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. It's not too often that I find people to talk Torino's with. It's a pretty rare sight around here to find a Torino at a show or catch one cruising the streets. To be honest, I don't get mine out that often anymore either. I've always concentrated on building up the drive train and ignoring the body and interior, so I usually just sneak out after dark and stay moving. Well, it's not that bad, but does have original paint and interior, so it's showing it's age a bit (kinda like me).Wink
I just couldn't get over how similar Uante's first car looked to mine in the old pics. It looks like a black roof on my screen, but must be dark brown to go with the interior color. I painted the bottom of mine black right after I got it to take care of all the chips (and hide a little rust). I installed a '69 Cobra Jet scoop within about the first year and later switched it to a larger Comet GT scoop that fits the lines of the hood very well.  I've got a '72 Sport hood that's rusty in all the right places, so I won't feel a bit bad about cutting it up to fit my '73 someday. I've been collecting Sport parts for a possible conversion, but I just can't bring myself to change anything.
It was completely stock when I got it nearly 30 years ago, right down to the hubcaps. I've done all the work to it over the years, so hopefully I can help out with questions from time to time about these cars. Thanks againCool

I've been going back and reading a lot of older posts and the subject of hood scoops comes up quite a bit. I had a '69-'70 Mustang ('68-'69 Torino) scoop on for quite a few years, but switched to a Comet GT scoop (also used on '69-'70 Cougar Eliminators) and like the fit much better. The Stang scoop was pretty small on the big Torino hood. I think the GT scoop fits the body lines of a '73-up hood really well and is big enough to fill the center better. I've got a rusty '72 sport hood and plan on grafting the scoop on a '73 hood someday, but I believe I'll leave this hood as is for a spare. My car is in the back garage for winter, but I found these pics for now. The first is where it rests in the Summer months. The second is of a pretty cool trophy I won and the hood shows pretty good in the background.Cool

Your hood scoop fits the line of your front end perfectly.  The '73 front end is more geometric while the '72 is kind of organic.  In my taste, the '72 hood scoop and the '73 front end does not perfectly match in style.  I think you came up with the ideal harmony.  Great job and welcome to the site!!!

Here is a pic just for comparison purposes. Both looks great btw!!!

Thanks! I'll get a better pic when I dig it out this Spring. The Merc scoop gets bigger as it goes back and follows the '73-up hood lines very well. I may never change to the '72 scoop, but I'll probably still build it just to have.Cool

Go with the 72 "Franken-Scoop"! Don't be scared! Thumbs Up

I think if you paint the grille in the scoop to match the front grille, it matches just fine. In fact the grille patterns are pretty close to matching. If it's blacked out I can see how people might think it's a mismatch, especially if the front grille is all faded and nasty like mine was when I got it.

Besides a fully integrated scoop always looks cleaner than a bolt on top one. IMO

Not to worry, I'm still building a "Franken-Scoop"! I've always wanted one, and probably won't be able to take it off once it's done. I may lighten my current hood with a hole saw up and down the bracing for drag strip duty.Cool

I have one of those scoops on my torino that I just bought and couldn't figure out what it came from other than I knew it was a ford/merc product.  Thanks for the information I am glad to know it came from a comet GT.

They're 15X8.5 with 4" backspacing and the tires are 255/70's. I've run other 8.5" wheels with 4.5" backspacing and found they give a nicer fit for 275/60 or bigger tires, but the 255/70's are the same height and I like the dish on the wheel while still keeping the tires tucked inCool.

I'm interested to hear what you've done to your 460 to put your car into the 12's. I built my car over the years like you did to hit the 11's. Nice to see another Torino owner who races on the drag strip, welcome.

Here's a video of my car at Mission Raceway:

I built the 460 about 20 years ago, so it's a little out dated from what you can get today, but it's always treated me well. It's a '73 engine with standard bore, standard crank and stock passenger car non-broached rods with ARP rod bolts. It's had years of passes, some nitrous use and lot's of street miles without a problem. It probably could use a freshening up, but it's last pass was still a 12.57, so it ain't dead yet!

Pistons are race dome TRW 2443 Forged at about 10.5 compression with my 92cc heads
Heads are '73 open non-police cut for Manley single groove 2.25 in, 1.88 swirl polish ex
Home ported to remove emission bump, unshroud valves, raise port to match headers
Cut pedestals for 7/16" studs, guide plates, 3/8" pushrods, 1.73 H-S aluminum rollers
Comp Cams Magnum 294 Solid flat tappet cam kit, springs, retainers etc.
Edelbrock Torker II single plain with 1" spacer, Holley 850 double, Holley "Blue" pump
Mallory dual point, Accel super coil, solid core wires
Hooker Super Comps, 1 7/8" primary, 3" collector, 3" Flowmaster series 40's
Column shift 5-clutch C6 with B&M shift kit, TCI Streetfighter with approx 3500 stall
Richmond 4.33 street gears, full spool, '70 Lincoln Mark III 31 spline axles

The rest of the car has stock suspension with sway bar removed and battery relocated to the trunk. I've removed the AC parts, inner fenders, switched to a manual box, manual brakes and removed most of the front bumper brace. It could use some more lightening like door braces, sound deadener etc, but I'm thinking about putting some of the "comforts" back on and removing the spool for cruising. The nearest track is 125 miles away and I haven't raced for quite a while, but you never know.Cool
