Are there different lengths in column shafts? I just tried I stalling a tilt column in my 77 cougar. Theres atleast 2 inches between the shaft and the collar. I thought the column was from a 76. Has this happened to anyone?

The column is collapsible by design, try attaching a pair of vice-grips above the machined area at the bottom of the steering shaft. Take a hammer and drive the vice-grips downward, away from the steering wheel.

i put a tilt column (from a 75? t-bird) in my 74 torino, everything from the mounting brackets up to the wheel were the same length, but the end of the shaft was about 1 1/4" longer over all, so i cut it at the taper and back about an inch, rewelded it works perfect! also ground off the shifter boss so it will be a tilt with floor shift Wink

DAMN ERROR MESSAGES, trying to attach pic to explain Angry. Mark the inner shaft before trying to drive the inner shaft out of the steering column tube, to know how far it needs to be driven.

it depends on the gearbox, the saginaw box and ford box use two different length shafts, but you either push in or pull out the collapsable shaft as required
