I'm new on this forum but got lots of good ideas to help restore my 1973 Gran Torino Sport.  This is my first post (hope I do it right), I do have a question that I seem not to be able to find.  I need to rebuild my steering gearbox.  My GTS has the Ford steering gearbox.  I'm been told that in 1973 GTS some had the Saginaw gearbox.  Is one better than another?  Should I keep the Ford or change to the Saginaw?  Can you get a rebuild kit for the ford unit?  I found rebuild kits for the Saginaw unit but did not find one for the Ford.

Has anyone converted to a quick-ratio Saginaw steering gearbox (12.7 ratio)?  Is it worth it?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

The Saginaw box from a 71-73 Boss Mustang , code SPA-T, will bolt in. Change the hoses. It's a 3 turn box as opposed to a stock 4 turn.

late model Z28/TransAm quick ratio parts can also be used to update a standard ratio Saginaw box, some lathe work needed though

Somewhere I heard that a '93-'98 Grand Cherokee steering box will bolt up. Was I misinformed?

AWESOME!! My mind is not total mush.

I have a complete set-up for a '98 Grand Cherokee in my garage. I pulled it off a parts Jeep we bought for our off-road project. It has the pump, hoses, box, etc all still hooked up. If you guys would like, I can compare it to the box on the '72 I'm parting out to see what will work. I can make pics as well.

Please do! The issue in my mind is the coupler to the column, and the pitman arm interchange.

I'll get it done this weekend. After replying back, I remembered that I pulled the steering box and all assorted hardware off a '74 2 door I parted out a while back. I will get them both lined up together, see if I still have the Ford and Jeep couplers (check for compatability to the Jeep part), compare arms and take pictures of it all. Guys, if this does work, it could be a blessing as these Jeep boxes steer like a dream and are very plentiful.

Heck, I have so many odd parts lying in my garage, we might figure out solutions and improvements we never knew existed. I'd make a picture, but it might scare everyone...

The Jeep boxes are dirt cheap and available at part stores nationwide, too!

AGR makes variable ratio gearboxes, they are like $500 though.

Guys, I made pics of 4 different steering boxes yesterday ('96 Grand Cherokee, '98 Grand Cherokee, '74 Torino, '72 Torino) and tried to detail the differences. If you would like, I can detail them here or start a thread by itself.

Will do that this afternoon. I still have to make sure the steering shaft will interchange. The pittman arms are different, but the shaft looks to be the same, so swapping the arms should not provide much challange.
