I just wondered if anyone had managed to connect their standard Sports pack instruments to an MSD system.
Basically, I've started wiring as per - http://www.ranchero.us/forums/showthread.php?t=8411 , running the tach in series........so from the ign switch it runs through the tach then to the + side of the coil. But, the MSD system takes a signal from the ign switch to power the box..........and an external supply to send a signal to the coil. So if I connect the wire from the tach to the MSD I'd expect I'll see nothing on the tach. If I run the output from the MSD to the coil through the Tach - would that work? (MSD state nothing other than the MSD to be connected to the coil).....so I suspect not...... The MSD does have an output for a tach, but it's a single wire and I would suspect designed to work with a parallel type tach? Just wondered if anyone had done it? Thanks Neil

Nope. But feel free to fill me in when you figure it out. I may go that route with the Ranchero.

Yes, I'd assume so - i.e the tach is powered externally......and the tach receives its signal from the MSD box...

Well, I believe the older Torino indash tachs go 'in series' in line. The later cars (My Cougar), have a parrallel setup like I described.. I have my factory tach running off the MSD box.

I tried to run the factory tach and my Haltech EFI off the same HEI designated tach wire and my EFI wouldn't run. The factory tach takes a lot more juice than the aftermarket ones. My EFI fired right up after I disconnected the factory tach and hooked up an Auto Gauge tach instead.

Thanks to all that contributed - and a happy new year! Got it sorted - I think!
You need an MSD Tach Adapter 8920........basically it's for a current sensing tach, the MSD website had all of the data sheets for their adapters........just need to finish off the rest of my dash re-wiring.
