Hi,
does anyone have pics of the towing package option for a 74 torino? My wife wants to buy a small trailer (or caravan as we call it in England) for weekends away. I don't have a towing hook on my car but I know there was an towing package option. Due to the cost of shipping, it would probably be cheaper to fabricate one here but if anyone has any measurements, plans, pics to start me off, I would appreciate it.
ps: Mods, there was a topic called toring package but it was closed so I couldn't post to it.
thanks
James

This is a picture of a 1973 gran torino that came origianally from the factory with the towing package option. the tow hitch in the picture appears to be a class 2 or class 3 tow hitch (it is probably a class 2 tow hitch though). The 1974 tow hitch is probably very similar to this one. Notice how this tow hitch connects to the bumper and it also connects to the vehicle frame underneath the car. The connection points to the frame underneath the car are right behind both rear wheels. ![]() Edited by dave302 - 23-April-2014 at 8:54PM |

Thanks Dave. Do they all bolt to the bumper? Only reason I ask is that I'm not sure if the 74 model introduced the energy absorbing bumpers or not, would these allow for movement?
Are there any other pics available of the underside mounting or even pics of it off the car?
Mods,
thanks for opening the other thread, please feel free to close this one if you want me to use the original.

When I get mine out of storage I will take a picture of mine. Mine is a class 3. It has a 2 inch receiver. That picture is of a class one. My class 3 is bolted completely to the frame, not to the bumper. There are universal hitches that you can buy that will attach to the bumper, but I don't recommend them. I will try to get pics soon.

Did you ever get a chance to dig out your hitch and take pics? I have placed a wanted ad on the forum. The wife is still thinking about getting some sort of trailer (or caravan as they're called in the UK), although she did see a nice Airstream the other day but not sure if the Torino & hitch could pull one of those.

The one in that pic is a class 1 or 2. NOT what you want/need.
I bought a $35 small bolt on for the bumper on my 76, again not what you want. I replied in your for sale thread, but I am working on a class 3 from a Universal style. I would be willing to fab one up and ship it for you when I do mine. Just as easy to make 2 of them as it is to do 1. Let's stay in touch through PM. Do me a favor and send me a pic of your rear frame rail area. |

My Montego wagon has a hitch on it, most likely installed in the 70s - 80s. Given that my wagon has a factory 460, I'm thinking it was used for towing a boat or camper, back in the day. The hitch is bolted to the frame, not the bumper. It's a Class 2 at minimum, maybe even a Class 3. I kinda doubt the rear frame area is the same as your cars, with it being a wagon, but I can take pictures of it, if that would help. Only problem is my wagon is backed into the garage, while I'm rebuilding the front suspension. So it might be a couple of weeks before I can get it out to take good pictures.

My '76 Ford Elite had a hitch welded to the frame. It rivaled the one on the back of my '79 for the amount of steel welded to the frame!
Sad to say, no pictures, but good lord I waxed my knees on it a few times. I did find on Perogie, NOS trailer hitch kits with a 1973 part number. Give them a try http://www.perogie.com/7276NOSTorino.htm

Tow rating is in the owners manual. My 76 cougar with 460/C6 is 6000 lb.
