Just wondering, has anyone tried to swap on a 72-73 rear bumper in place of a 74-77 one? Did 73 rear bumpers get pushed out a bit like on fastbacks?

The 72-73 Montego/Torino wagons and the ranchero use the same bumper. The 74-77 torino/montego and the one year LTD II wagon have a different design. There is a inner brace mounted on the inside of the bumper. As well there are 5 MPH absorbers mounted to the rear frame of the car. The 74-79 ranchero remained to use the old 72-73 wagon bumpers because of the fact they are considered a "truck" and did not have to meet the new car impact standards.

Hey Dan,

Although there are differences that you mention, can they be interchanged?  I'm curious to know if a Ranchero bumper will fit my '76 Montego wagon.  Either with or without some modification to bumper brackets, etc?

I am putting the rear bumper off the '74 Ranchero on Stripper. Swapped the mounts off the '72 onto the '74 bumper and almost ready to go. I also removed the bumper guards for a better look.

The body of the ranchero (rear) stayed the same from 72-79 (because it was considered a truck) The wagon's had several changes to accommodate the larger rear bumper. first the rear frame section is different. the body fit where the bumper would wrap around is different. The larger rear bumpers use a filler (like the front) and the ranchero does not. I am sure there are some other things I missed but i think you get the idea. The ranchero bumper would only be a direct bolt on for the 72-73 modle years of torino and montego.  hypotheticly speaking you could "make" the car you are thinking about if you dd the following: use a 73 Torino wagon and bolt on a 74-76 front clip. That would use the front end YOU have with the correct set up in the back for the smaller neater looking bumper.

If you'd like, I can make some pictures of my '72 wagon frame section to compare to yours. Not sure, but perhaps you could clip it like we do on '73 to '72 front end swaps.

Thanks Joe,  I'll just check it out next week, when you're down for the Moonshine festival.

Nice to know I can get a bumper off of any Ranchero for my wagon. Mine got bent upwards and won't allow the tailgate to open.
