I found this cool article, about a 1968 Fairlane 428CJ "R-code". As you can see I commented that R-code meant 428CJ-Ram-Air, not flat hood. All the Fairlane etc 428CJ cars for 1968 were flat hood, C6 cars. No ram-air, no 4-speed. So I figure the VIN should be a Q for a 428CJ Fairlane. But then I realized, Q was still the 428/340 7-Liter in 1968. So what was the VIN for the non-ram-air 428CJ in 1968? Did they use R for both non-ram-air and ram-air? Maybe. My shop manuals are printed too early to tell. If so, 22 cars sounds like a small total, even if it's Fairlane only. Anybody know how many 1968 (and 1969) Fairlane-Torino-Montego-Cyclones were built each year? I know the Mustang numbers, those are easy, but the Fairlane stuff is harder to find. And were all the 68 428CJ VIN's "R"? |

Dave,
thanks - sorry I wasnt clear, I was trying to find the ** 428CJ ** totals in the Fairlane-Torino & Montego-Cyclone for 1968 and 1969. The only cryptic notes I have are about 14885 total 428CJ for 1969 Fairlane-Torino, including 2323 Q-C6 cars and 754 Talladegas. Kinda vague. I suspect that in 1968, there were far fewer. I have down about 2550 total 428CJ in the Mustang+Shelby for 1968, which isnt all that many. It seems the 428CJ in the B-Body was kind of an afterthought for FoMoCo in 1968, c6 only, non-ram-air only (maybe still an "R" in the VIN, that's why I asked) so likely very few made. I hate to think it was as few as 22 - maybe only 22 FAIRLANES with 428CJ in 1968? Maybe more if you count Torino and Cyclone. Mustang numbers are everywhere but the B-Body stuff is harder to find. Thanks for the effort. |

Ahhh, gotcha. Might want to check this book out. Not sure if it lists stats, but have been contemplating getting it.
The 428 CJ was a mid-year option on the mid-sized Fords' so suspect numbers would be low on that year, especially Fairlane. This article references near the bottom that 660 428/C6 combos were produced '68 Torino GT's. Period brochures had the 427 listed as an option on the '68's, but thought I read of a strike or something that year and no 427 '68 Torino's are know to have been produced. (A 427 in a Fairlane could be had in '66 & '67, though pretty low numbers were produced).
