I got a good look at my motor mounts on my 72/GTS/351c. They are in iffy condition.
Are motor mounts symetrical? I want to buy a pair of new motor mounts at rockauto, but I am not sure about fitment…left/right etc.. Thanks.

They are different left to right, and symmetrical. Interesting story; I bought a pair for my first car's 4V build, and one side was wrong in the box. That was from AutoShack, now AutoZone, the mount in the box labeled for the right side, had a left mount in it. I compared the old mounts and went back to the store with the new and old one. They stocked two at the time and both were wrong. I had to drive to another store about ten miles away and got the correct one. Part sources often mix up parts, so always compare the old and new parts when you get them.

Wow, the choices for brands now is poor, I just looked and didn't recognize any of the common brands available. I saw some eBay listings for a couple of old brands, one being TRW. It looks like the two mounts are so close to being the same, some brands make one mount they claim fits both sides. One eBay listing stated the mounting holes are 7.0" apart for one side, and 7.375" on the other side. So the easiest path looks like the RA site and two DEA parts, $8.95 each and seem popular. This part description is for one of those, the left side seems much more rare than the right side mount; DEA / MARMON RIDE CONTROL A2370

Exactly my thinking guys. The ads on rockauto say ‘right/left’….those DEA cleveland mounts were the ones I was looking at. So…….2 of those will be ok?….

I was looking around to see if anything else was out there besides those on RA. I didn't find much else, and a couple of bad reviews of brands that were claiming one part fit both sides, the holes not lining up. So that DEA brand seemed like the best choice from the limited information available, and RA was the cheapest, Summit just behind.

Man…I dont get it. Do the rockauto DEA mounts fit or dont they? They say ‘right/left’….but they dont look ‘mirrored’…..
How would you ‘mirror’ , so they fit…..? Has anybody changed there motor mounts on their 72 GTS? 351cj engine..

The location of the frame mount holes is slightly different in distance apart, and also front to back versus the other side. When I had the issue with a new parts store mount, I didn't know until I was trying to put them on the engine, and comparing them to the old ones to figure out which was left and right. I didn't know which of the old ones were left and right because they are so close to being the same, and I had the old ones off and not marked. But I did notice the new ones both matched one used one. When I had the other correct new one in hand, confirmed, and with the correct box, then I put them on the correct side and they worked fine. I bet those DEA mounts will work fine, and it's likely they are as good as the quality of other brands. Unless someone posts here soon about other experiences with newer mounts, I'd buy those.

The left and right motor mounts are unique, as they bolt to the fame and the angle is mirrored side to side. Over the years we have never got a clear answer on what the correct aftermarket motor mounts are. One thing I can say, is that any listing that shows they fit left and right is inocorrect. The mounts are the same for the 302, 351W and 351C (351CJ makes no difference).
Here are the current Rock Auto Listings: I think any of the 2370 and 2371s are your correct right and left mounts. If you do order and confirm, please post the results so I can make a sticky post. Here are a couple of old threads that cover the topic: |

Mounts are different left and right. Early (72-some 73) frame dimensions are different (slightly smaller) where the mount straddles the crossmember. 74-79 mounts fit the early frame, early may not fit later frames.
302/351W/351C all use the same mounts. 351M/400 has a different set of mounts, 429/460 yet another set.

People have done that before using a urethane liquid mixture they bought. It's been years since I read of that, and I think it was on the Corral forum. They did it fully at home and I think it was from a product made for such mounts, trans mounts too etc.

Like I posted above, there was lots of discussion on this topic. In these old threads people did find aftermarket mounts that worked, unfortunately nobody posted the part numbers. The problem is the listings incorrectly show the same mount is used left and right. The reality is left and right are different. Personally, I'd take a chance on the 2370 and 2371 as they are clearly different parts. However, you are overseas, so returns and shipping aren't so cheap and you might be out some cash if they don't work.

i think you're probably chasing shadows. the pic of the right side mount, it's a 'clamshell' style mount that holds the engine side captive, it can't go anywhere. yes it can get worn out, dry rot, crumble and spit out the rubber but from here it doesn't look too bad

and yes you can reset your old mounts in urethane but be aware they'll be a lot stiffer than stock. urethane can break stuff, engine blocks, transmission cases, strut rods .... |

Not positive that these are what you are looking for but they are listed as NOS with part #'s D30Z-6038-C and D30Z-6038-D. They are on ebay right now listed by Stilwell Obsolete for $159.00. I haven't dealt with a 351 mount before but maybe someone on here can confirm if they are what you are looking for or not.

Thanks for the headsup. But, before I have them in hand in Denmark , it will cost me upwards 300bucks. Ouch!
I will take a close look at mine when engine is out…and see….

I would spend the $300 for oem over epoxy filled. Solid mounts would wear out their welcome in five minutes.

Daaaammmmmiit! I was very very very very careful screwing out the engine-side motor mount bolts……the 3rd bolt snapped. Ugh!😑
One exhaust manifold bolt…..and one engine mount bolt for the snappage tally.
Anyway…engine is now free of mounts, accessories etc….and ready to come out. Hopefully tomorrow. I will try to snap a few fotos too.👍🤠 |

Are the engine side motor mount bolts the same for 302/351w as for 351c?
ARP has a set, but not indicated for 351c. Thanks…

The stock bolts are almost all reusable, but yes those bolts should swap for any small block ford. The OEM bolts are typically the best you can get, with exceptions of many that ARP sells. Some you always chuck the old hardware, like the exhaust bolts.

How big are you, those are pretty strong bolts? I have a friend who was 6'4", and his sons were 6'5" and 6'7". One son broke a crankshaft bolt on a Taurus SHO, and that's tough to do. He had worked up to breaker bars, and finally had one about three feet long. The bolt wouldn't let go, and then part of it did. I wasn't there, but his father was and they spent hours getting at the bolt to get it out etc. FYI, when or if you remove the camshaft, be very gentle with the cam retaining plate bolts. Those are grade 8, but they are only 1/4" bolts, and easy to twist the heads off of them. The torque for those is maybe 5lbsft or so at most, I forgot. Use a drop of blue loctite and just your wrist with a 1/4" small ratchet.

That's a low torque like a valve body bolt, but I think I twisted off the head of my retaining bolt with well under that force. Best advice is to never use a large ratchet of 3/8" etc, or a long handle. I've R&R'd many VB's and learned with the 1/4" torque wrench, to do it without. Just be easy with them.
