I have not done a single thing to it yet other than put 5 gals of premium gas in it to get it home to Lexington. It still has the old window tint on it that has turned purple.Geek

Any 2 or 4 marking on the head corner? If no, I say 400. The bar cast in block near distributor I believe is M.

Congrats, and enjoy that new project. I don't think it's one of those three engines, so I'll guess it's a BBF.

How many valve cover bolts are there, and better describe the thermostat housing? The block in front of the driver side head doesn't look familiar to me, and I don't know big blocks well. That reminds me of the 400 block, but I don't see enough of them there to be sure. If the thermostat housing is on the block, I'd bet it is a 351M or 400(with 8 VC bolts).

What is the VIN? Fourth symbol says what factory sold it with.

   I didn't even think of 385 series.

The fourth number in the vin is a "8". The 1970-1979 Ranchero breaks down the 3rd and 4th digits as: 47=Ranchero 500, 48=Ranchero GT, 49=Ranchero Squire. My vin shows "48". It has 8 bolts on the valve cover which should be 351C/351M/400.

not a 429/460. the Upper radiator hose is coming up out of the block, not forward out of the intake.
335 series engine. Look at the motor mount. Is it a 302/351W/C style or a 351M/400 style.
351C can alsoo be determined by intake width and block height at distributor to manifold area.
Cool car!

Very good, 8 VC bolts. The block is taller than a C, so it has to be the 400 or 351M. The height between the block timing cover area, up to the heads is more than a 351, and much more than a 302.

Yes, I know my stuff very well, but remembering what other things looked like from 45 years ago, that's hard. I have a 400 block buried in my garage, but I haven't seen it in almost 20 years.

Nowadays in modern times, you use a phone to keep pictures of everything, and you can search through them easily later on.

Sorry. The fifth digit is the letter designation of the engine. S code is a 400.

Also, on the block above the starter is the casting number.  And next to the oil sending unit is casting date and foundry info. My block was cast at the Michigan Casting Center on October 21, 1977.

A cell pic is easy to get without jacking the car up. Just do it when the engine is cool.  LOL

Block numbers won't help as 351M and 400 use the same casting. Same goes for heads and intake/exhaust manifolds.
Cleveland went extinct in 74, so unless it was swapped in it's M/400.
Swapping in a C in a M/400 car also requires a trans swap, (or possibly a bell/TC swap at minimum) as well as at least a partial exhaust system.
