I can't remember the last time I saw a 2 door and every time I see one I look for a 2 Door. The 2 Door has always been the preferred car for builders but I don't think they'll be available for our kids or granddkids in 20 or 30 years. Are 2 Doors just not made or do people just not want them? Has anyone else noticed this? It's not just with Ford's.

My wonderful wife has a 2015 Honda Civic. She wanted the 2 door coupe, though. Took a bit of searching around the St. Louis area, and in-between random riots and protests, we finally found one. I really didn't expect it to be quite that difficult to find out, so it lends credence to your post. This was back in late late 2014, so I bet the 2-door situation has only gotten worse. We're obviously not talking about Mustang/Challenger/Vette, etc. I assume.

I'm not referring to the dedicated sports car. I expect the future of car building will be more about the smaller "tuner" cars. That's just a reality of the cars being built today that will appeal to kids in the future because of basic economics. How many "youngsters" had high dollar cars when you were young? Most start with what they can afford, not what they want. The legacy of the Escort as a preferred rally car in Europe started because it was affordable and then Ford started producing the Escort Mexico because it was so good.

The Focus had 2 door models all the way until 2011. The new body style is, 4 door hatch or 4 door sedan only though. I have had one of each body style, and currently have a 2012.

There are still plenty of 2 door smaller cars out there, but I do think manufacturers are leaning more towards 4 door cars for the practicality. Most people nowadays have families, and 2 door cars are just not family friendly. Especially when car seats are required nowadays. Years ago, your kid just squeezed himself into the backseat and sat there. Now, younger kids must be in child seats, and that's no fun trying to get back there in a 2 door.

Just my 2 cents.

now days they're all just disposable cars...i don't think most people care what they buy, except a few of us that like a sporty 2 dr car like a vette, challenger, camero, mustang. i don't see hardly any of these new cars being around in 40 years, they just won't last that long.
there were plenty of 4dr cars back in my day, nobody wanted one unless you were older, and god forbid your car broke down you didn't dare borrow grandma's 4dr or the family wagon to drive on cruise night! you'd never live that down LOL

Johnny,

Your thought that cars today won't be around in 40 years surprises me. Unlike the cars that are the subject of this site which were designed with built in obsolescence, todays cars are designed and built to last much longer. The only thing I can think of that is better about older cars is my preference for them.

You're right about the family or grandma's car at cruise night but that's a U.S. and maybe Canada phenomenon. Anywhere else I've been unique or different is what people want. Everything but conformity is pursued. In Japan it's common to see a car painted like the owners favorite cartoon character. In Europe, altering cars to extremes from as built is common and the more obscure the car is the better. This isn't a criticism one way or the other. Just an acknowledgement of different car cultures out there. I'm sure someplace grandma's car would be just the thing.

Child seats! Your point makes a lot of sense with that necessity. It's eye opening when remembering what car travel was once like. No seat belts, standing up on seats at 70 or 80 with metal dashes. Very different times. I remember playing at driving when I was about 3. I put the car in neutral, it started rolling out of the driveway and I couldn't stop it. Thankfully I only slammed into the curb across the street and the only thing hurt was my backside. Another change with the times.

I'm just saying that the new cars aren't built as well as older car...bearly hit something and they fold up like a pop can, plastic bumpers just fall off on the road, freeway is littered with them! (None of my chrome bumpers ever fell off!!!) Clearcoat and paint just peels off, stuff is just glued together. I just don't see the majority of these new cars ever lasting for 40+ years like our old cars did

They don't sell in enough volume for the manufacturers to justify building many of them. The reason you won't see Ford build a midsize coupe is that it will eat into Mustang sales.

I agree with you partially. The newer cars do a far better job of absorbing collision forces before they get to the passenger compartment. I too don't see these cars making it 30 to 40 years to be restored. Not to mention all of the additional crap you'd have to deal with restoring one.
