So I have this major oil leak apparently at the rear main seal. This, just a few months after a complete rebuild. My next question would be this: Can I remove the oil pan without raising the engine, and be able to replace the seal without dismantling too much else? I have no way of raising the car except for ramps, and a hoist would be a rental. Am I getting in too deep, or should I fork over the bucks to a garage?

fork over the cash if you dont have to right tools or the right buddies that have the right tools.  But a rear main needs to atleast movet the tranny somewhat out of the way and dropping the pan without lifting the engine would only benefit you an inch if that sorry for the bad news but sometimes that is the way it rolls

Rear Main Oil Seal Repalcement Instructions For All 1970-75 Engines:

Note: The rear oil seal installed in these engines is a rubber type seal.

1. Drain the crankcase and remove the oil pan.

2. Loosen all main bearing cap bolts, lower the crankcase slightly but not more than 1/32 inch.

3. Remove rear main cap, and remove upper and lower halves of seal. On the block of seal, use seal removing tool or insert a small metal screw into end of seal with which to draw out.

4. Clean seal grooves with solvent and dip replacement seal in clean engine oil.

5. Install upper seal half in its groove in block with lip torward front of engine by rotating it on a seal journal or crankshaft until approximately 3/8 inch protrudes below parting surface.

6. Tighten other main caps and torque to specifications.

7. Instal lower seal half in rear main cap with lip to front and approximately 3/8 inch of seal protrudes to mate with upper seal.

8. Install rear main cap and torque.

9. Dip side seals in clean engine oil and install them. Tap seals in last half inch if necessary. Do not cut protruding ends of seals.

10. Install Oil pan and add oil.
