I'm looking at a 73 Ranchero in a few days that's an original A/C car but has a 460 swapped in. The whole A/C system is in place except the compressor. The engine also have a serpentine belt setup. I need A/C and haven't seen a big block car with A/C so I have no idea where the compressor should go. But the bigger question is can the compressor be added back in using the serpentine setup?

With the serpentine conversion, I would see if i could identify the bracket manufacturer and see if they offer an add-on bracket. You may be looking at replacing the entire set up as well.
The factory mounts and original compressor won't mount up in there, and since you will probably be needing new hoses made, it doesn't matter where it mounts on the engine as long as it doesn't interfere with anything. Depending on application Ford used a couple of different AC compressors and mountings through the years; Before going through everything you may want to attempt to test the rest of the AC components before digging in.

I asked the seller to send me a closeup photo or provide the manufacturer and part number if it's marked with anything. Hopefully I can identify it from there.

This is the set up I have on my BBF in my '79 Ranchero. The brackets were sourced from a '76 Thunderbird, uses the better Saginaw PS pump along the A6 A/C compressor. These A/C-PS brackets can also be found on '72-'78 Lincoln Continentals and Mark IV & V, Mercury Marquis brackets using the same A/C & PS pumps WILL NOT WORK! I have since upgraded to an all aluminum A6 replacement compressor, dual electric fans and a 320 amp hairpin alternator(lots of stereo equipment). A factory equipped Torino would use a Tecumseh or York style of compressor and Ford PS pump. Hope this pic is helpful.
![]() FWIW, brackets for later model EFI-style A/C, PS and Alternator utilizing multi rib belts, not a true serpentine belt system, places the A/C compressor too high and will not allow hood closure.

Yeah, It's a Hybrid...It burns gas and tires. No matter how good she looks, somebody, somewhere, is tired of her sh*t. Beauty is skin deep, ugliness goes clear to the bone. |
