Hey guys.

1973 Gran Torino wagon with the 6.6L/400 cid engine. The forums say that I need 5x114.3 bolt pattern wheels. That is what my Lincoln town car is and wheels do not bolt up to my Wagon. I tried Mustang ones and they are close but do not fit. Are my studs a 5x139?

is it the wheel offset or the lug circle diameter that is the issue?

is the wheel hitting the brake or suspension before it reaches the studs?

5x114.3 is the late model high offset stud circle designation. a high offset wheel has little 'dish' protrusion and the lug flange is almost flush with the edge of the tire

5-4.5" is the designation used back in the day for low offset wheels like those that fit your 73 wagon. the lug flange is about in the center of the outside hoop and set back from the edge of the tire

to use high offset wheels on older cars you'd need a stack of spacer plates and that's never recommended

are you sure your wagon is not 5-5" wheel stud diameter?

Could it be a center pilot issue?

Yeah, It's a Hybrid...It burns gas and tires.

Right? could be the hub register but i think the newer wheels have a larger diameter than the older ones?

IIRC, a '73 wagon uses 5 on 5" wheels. Not 100% sure though

I should be more specific. The wheel studs do not line up to the wheel holes. They are close but not close enough.

Ok so did a little research or playing around and I noticed the studs on the gran Torino are bigger than the Mustang or Panther platforms. That is why those wheels will not work unless you drill out the mounting holes slightly bigger. Possibly why the ranger/explorer wheels fit because of the stud hole on the rims are slightly bigger.

all should be 1/2"-20, i have 2 Panthers here as well as a 72 Ranchero, all will accept the same lugs. and i've used Mustang wheels on both Crown Vics, Mustang, Explorer, Escape, Crown Vic all accept the same wheels AFAIK

Panther wheel & tire info thread,

Ok sounds good. I have a set of PPV Crown Vic wheels I want to use on the Gran Torino.

I see the issue now. Backspacing on the Crown vic wheels make it so they can not fit the gran torino without 2” wheel spacers. 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻

I have fit 2004-2005 GT mustang wheels but with the high offset and need for spacers, sold them to a kid with a Subaru that takes the same bolt pattern.

Honestly, Ranger / Mazda pickup wheels for the 90's - 2000's will fit good and allow you to run a 255/60R15 or similar sized tire no issues.
Never tried a 275/60R15 but that might be a tad wide for those ranger steelies.

Another option would be 1st and 2nd gen Explorers and Mercury Mountaineer SUV's.
Ford Aerostars sometimes had 15x7" wheels.
15" tires are also getting to be a joy to locate.

Alternatively up to 2000 Crown Vics had a 16" steely with correct offset but 16" car tires are a pain to find these days.
