Hey guys, I put up a quick video to ask what you guys think this is.....it's like a tapping or popping sound and it's only coming out of the left pipe. It sounds like it has a miss? What could cause. That? I couldn't run it for very long because of my fan.

Well here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOUBLW1J4uQ

This may work

And no, I did not put the stupid hitch on the car lol

could be a plug misfiring, plug wire breaking down, any leaks at the headers? does it still pop under throttle? do you have a timing light? you could put the timing light pickup around each wire and watch the light see if it stops flashing at the same time as the pop to find if it is an offending wire. pull the plug wires one at a time see if you can locate the cylinder at is misfiring, if the idle don't change but the popping stops that may be the cylinder, then you can look into that cylinder more, make sense?

No exhaust leaks, and I don't think it still pops under throttle, and I don't have a timing light, but I have a friend who could let me use one.

Yes, still pops under throttle

Sounds like maybe that's a timing issue?

Ok, this is old school, but...

Take a dollar bill, hold it on both ends with your fingers, give the bill a small bit of slack and place it against the opening of the left pipe. If it tries to suck the bill in, you may have a bit of a problem.

If so, pull your coil wire off, and crank the engine over for about 15 seconds. Steady sound = something in your fuel or spark. Uneven cranking sound or a "dip" in the sound the starter makes and it means a burnt valve.

Old school, but it works.

I would suspect improperly adjusted rockers, bent pushrod first, though.

No compression issues there. It cranks strongly and evenly. Check plugs and wires. Readjust your carb as well.

Look for an exhaust leak. check header flange and work your way back. look for soot/blown gasket at the flange or connections. Your first video SOUNDS like an exhaust leak while running a bit rich. (choke on?) The dollar bill trick will show a bent/sticking/burnt valve, but will also react to an exhaust leak if the engine is running rich/burning off in the exhaust system.

Ok, I found out, that a non working alternator can cause a miss, and I think that's my problem! Today I'll check it, I'm supposed to be getting in a 1 wire soon, but knowing peopls "deals" these days, I'm not sure I'll get it......I don't think I'm going to order off of eBay from now on unless I absolutely have to!

AutoZone has GM 1 wire units dirt cheap. Lifetime warranty. Bought one for my '68 F100 a few years back for $35. Cheap.

bryan, it just hit me! you just got the alternator right now (your other thread) were you running the car without an alt.? and getting low on battery? that can cause a weak field in the coil and will pop and backfire just before dying, it just came to me!

If one or two plugs have a higher resistance, they may misfire without a steady, full current.

have you considered Induction Misfire ?

or just a plain old case of spark lost to ground by arcing through the wire?

what was the battery voltage when it was missing w/o the alternator working?

you might want to try the 'dark spark test'

I don't think the spark is arcing through the wire, they look fairly good (no holes, wears, ect.) not sure what the voltage was when running it. As soon as I can get another v-belt, after I take off the ps pump, and get a wire for the new alternator. Dark spark test?

From Wackipedia:
"Dark Spark refers to a realm of energy/space unseen but known to exist. Like Dark Matter, or the Dark Side of The Force, Dark Spark was once good, normal Spark. The Sith Lords turned Dark Spark against Good, and now it exists to confound all attempts to make a decent car run."

After dark, open your hood and start the car. Look under the hood, (not with a flashlight) you may see arcing where your spark is shorting. You can also use a spray bottle and MIST the plug wires(DO NOT drown them). If you see arcing, you have a problem
