In the middle of nowhere in orange county ny this is what I spotted outside someone's barn. Knocked on the door to make an offer on this diamond in the rough but no answer. I had to check this car out before leaving hopefully without getting shot. All original 289 4 speed power steering power brakes and a console. Engine looks like it was never out no headers no rot no dents. Inspection sticker says 1989. I want this car. ... Check it out

A car that straight and unmolested is probably going to have some sentimental story holding it where it is. Son's car who passed, etc.
However, I feel that if you show a good intent with the owner, let him know you are not there to buy and flip, and you will send him pictures of the progress and show him the car when finished... you have a better than average shot at getting it. In their mind, their sentimental memories will live on in a better life you'll give the car. Or, it could be that you get lucky and they just say OK! |

I totally agree. My guess there is no dollar amount to let the car go. But I have to try very delicately. I will be there again this afternoon

Good luck! How visible is it from the road? How heavily traveled is the road? It looks pretty rural. Just wondering how many other folks may have seen it, and already tried.

Very rural area. Not too visible. You can just make out the taillight. No one home again. I had to take a pic of the motor. If I got caught I probably would have lost any chance of buying this car

or it could be one of those "i'm gonna fix it up one of these days" ten years later still rusting away till there's nothing left to restore then they haul it off for scrap.
my neighbor's have a car like that everyone asks she says no she told me she was offered $15,000 and turned it down it's a 70 challenger (looks in about the same condition as that mustang. of coarse it took me 5 years of bugging her to sell me her corvette they finally decided to sell it for $2,500 or $2,000 to me so i bought the vette but good luck don't give up! |

There's a junkyard near me that has had an elite since the early 80s. Nobody was allowed to touch it because it was gonna be the owner's project. perfect body, perfect interior, bad engine. They moved it out of where it sat for 30 years and the engine and frame fell out the bottom. There is nothing left of the frame, it's just a shell, seats even fell thru the floor. Right now, it's just a shell sitting on the ground and some yo-yo stood wheels in the wheel openings. That's what happens to "someday" projects. Hope you can rescue this one.

Best of luck on your journey to purchase! Be sincere to the owner, that is how I ended up purchasing my field find. This car had a interesting history. I listened to his widow for over 2 hours telling me all about it. she knew I was serious about preserving her deceased husbands memory.
BTW...is that a K code 67? air cleaner decal says it is. HHHMMMMM.....

For 10 years I've been trying to get this 73 Montego Q code 4 speed. I am hoping he will release it to me soon. For many years, he has been saying that he was going to fix it up someday...

Looking at a 68 S code 4 speed fastback Mustang by my house. My buddy is trying to get his brother to sell his half of the car and it will reside in my new garage. Everyone, please keep your fingers crossed for me.

So it turns out the owner bought the car in the early 80s. It needed a water pump and he parked it 25 years ago. Not as solid as I thought. The floorboards are rotted through. It was originally blue and comes with a family of mice. He asked how I knew it was there and I told him I spotted one tail light from the street. I asked if it was for sale and he told me everything is for sale. I knew his number wasn't going to be reasonable. I offered 5k. He came back at 12k. I left my number we parted ways and as I was leaving I noticed him leaning a pallet against the taillight so there was no visible evidence of an old mustang rotting away. What a shame.

That car has a slew of options! Wonder why it would have a maroon interior if it were originally blue?

I don't know what its worth rick... but did he have any wiggle room off the 12k?
at least you can get any part you need for this car. and btw... leela, my 73 sportroof looks white to me, but joe told me it was blue and so does the color code... maybe really faded. |

Locally here a '67 fastback that is solid other than pans will bring $8 - $10K. That one has the wheelcovers still in it - good sign. Engine has been boogered with, and there are signs of repair and repaint history, but if pans are all it needs, then I'd go $5 - 8K. However, I will bet there is other rust.
Need to add in repair, getting it on the road, and it is still a 289 car. |

There is nothing wrong with a 289 car. Mine is. They still bring good money. Rick, I think the car is worth 8k all day. As long as the title is good. There are alot of people who really want these cars. Socal is right about the Elenors though. I have battled off many of those people. The worst thing about it is when they change the tailight panel. These are one of the best looking tailight panels ever made on a car. Save the car Rick.

I think he threw that number out to get rid of me. Unless I was stupid enough to give him 12. I like the car but I already own my dream car.

Nope, nothing wrong with a small block 'Stang. However, the real money is with the big block cars. This one has had the jambs sprayed, the inside metal door panels and the dash. Points to watch out for.
That being said, the owner most likely is not interested in selling for whatever reason. I'd bet that he would find an excuse even if you offered $12k (no title, no keys, family member wants it, etc.). If he is willing, see if it has been cleaned the next time you drive by. Usually, an owner will spruce it up a bit if he has a serious buyer on the hook. Wash, install the hubcaps, clean around it. That kind of stuff. If not, he figures he's scared you off and will try to hide it from view. Bet it gets moved... |

I actually prefer a 289 car instead of the 390. I had one years ago and it used to really go like hell. Just my opinion
