Hi
Does anyone know 100% if 1972 cougar buckets are the same as a 72 Torino. Not the material but the seat frame and rails? Thanks |

The 72 Cougar should be the same as the Thunderbird then, those had a different body(bigger) until about 1974? The Montego should be a cousin to the Gran Torino, those seats should be the same. I have my old 72 GT seats, but I can't do without them unless I found a replacement(my wish is an 87-92 Supra power seat).

According to this thread, they will bolt right in. I don't know myself. I do know that the bolt spacing is about 11.75 on center side to side and 12.75 oc front to back for our cars bucket seat arrangement.

All of the bigger Fords of the 70's will probably have seats that can swap, the width might be a hair different based on the body width. I didn't mean to suggest they couldn't work, I thought the question was are they the same seat frame etc, like you would recover them with OEM level material. I would definitely go look at them, and also measure the seat frame bolt patterns. It's common for Ford to use seats with the same bolt pattern for most seat of a model run, various years etc.

72 Cougar is a Mustang chassis. Seats are narrower, mounting brackets are different, but seats might bolt to Torino sliders???
Cougar went to Torino/midsize chassis in '74. Tbird was a "MegaTorino" 72-76. (Same basic chassis, just longer/heavier/and even more heavier). Tbird was a "prettier" LTD II 77-79.

Okay, right Mustang chassis. I recall the Mustang seats in my friend's two Mustangs, a 72 and 73. Those were as nice as the Gran Torino bucket seats, I wouldn't have guessed they'd be narrower. DO go look at them, if the frame structure is all okay, you can have the foam and upholstery redone.

Ok guys. Thanks for all the replys. I'm not in that big of a rush yet. Lol. I think I will wait to find seats from a torino, montego or ranchero. Going to Ford nationals at Carlisle in a few weeks. Maybe I can find them there.

Brackets themselves for the rails/sliders are different, to bolt to the unibody floor pan of the cougar.
The Tbird however shares with Torino for 72+ The seats themselves can be used with the sliders, I have not noticed a width difference. Personally, I would actually use Torino seat rails, and find a set of fox body seats and get them redone. I used foxbody/cougar XR7 buckets for a while until I redid a set of Lincoln mark 7 buckets. I did have to fabricate spacer plates to adapt to the Foxbody/Mark 7 seats. My build thread details the plates I made. 3" long, and two holes spaced 1" apart with a stud welded on I want to say one of the plates, to bolt to the seat frame, otherwise all bolted together.

Thanks Andrew, that's good to know about the Thunderbird sliders/seat tracks. I have some 87 LSC seats to use in my 92 Mark VII, those earlier(1985ish-1989) LSC seats had nice shapes, and adjustable thigh bolsters. Those might be a good idea if they retrofit to the older Fords.

Don, I LOVE my Mk7 seats in my GTS.
Now, I did recover them, and make new covers. Talk about a process! If you look up my build thread "17 year barn nap" somewhere in all my rambling...it shows what I did on the seats.

That's great to hear. I have only ridden in an older Mark VII one time with those seats. My friend has owned several of them, and one that we parted out he saved the red seats from. He will give them to me, but they've been stored with something heavy on the cushions. So I need to get them reupholstered, and they will need some foam work of course. I could get to that sooner than later, if I knew I'd love those, I'd find others. Those have fairly compact power seat tracks, and have good access to most parts.
