Does anyone know if 73 and up door handles will work on a 72? I think I remember somewhere reading that the 72 handles hardware is specific to a 72. Something about the hinge and attaching parts. I could be wrong. Thanks

I want to say  72-79 are the same, with maybe a pattern change on some. But, because you mention there may be a difference, my brain keeps questioning my knowledge.

Thanks for the reply's. I'm pretty sure I found a 73 nos pair years ago and the seller told me the mounting was different after 72 and they would not work for my 72. I just remembered someone who might know the answer. I will call him Tuesday and see what he says.
Thanks

Ditto.

Ah, sorry, I thought this was about the handles on the door panels. Thanks Vince, you explained what is up with the part numbers. Ford used to use bolts for the door handles so long ago, I guess the change happened in that 70's range.

The rivets have been standard since then, I have a large box of black 1/4" rivets somewhere. Those are the same as used for the door lock actuators, and the window glass. I've never put them on any glass though, that's scary.

According to the Ford parts catalog, 1972 uses the same handle often listed for the 1973 Torinos.  They must have revised the part in 1973, because the catalog lists the 1973 part number for 1972 Torinos.

RH:   D3AZ-6522404-A
LH:   D3AZ-6522405-A

The later parts catalog updates the listing for 1973-76 Torinos as using the "rivet" design from the Fairmont, which are riveted in place instead of the early bolt on design.  So these were a "replacement part" not the original part number. It seems Ford only back dated this replacement to the 1973 Torino simply because the one catalog is 1965-72 and the next edition is 1973-79.

As far as I can tell, that is the only major difference is one is bolted and one is riveted, but they will otherwise interchange.  The replacement riveted door handles are part numbers:

RH - D8BZ-5422404-A
LH - D8BZ-5422405-A
