Greetings and much thank you in advance.
I've got a 73 Ranchero with a 9-in rear end and it had a bit of a howling noise that developed sounded like a set of off-road tires almost so come to find out the rear end was 3 qts low on oil. Filled it up with oil and it didn't go away but it started leaking. So I pulled the axles pulled the third member out I was going to change all the bearings in it at least the carrier bearings in the pilot bearing but none of them have any significant pitting or damage or wear patterns doesn't seem like they're needing to be replaced maybe it was just due to incorrect opinion spacing any ideas on this?

they say if a Model T isn't leaking oil there's no oil in it, same with your 9"

sounds like (pun intended) it needs a complete rebuild with new ring & pinion or replace the complete pig

sorry for your loss

The thing is nothing looks burned or harmed in any way. I don't see any damage

could be an axle bearing or both?

did you get eyeballs on the pinion pilot bearing & journal?

won't cost anything but time & effort to put it back together with pinion depth & ring gear lash reset and see what it does

Does it make the noise always or on acceleration or deceleration only?
I ran mine low after replacing seals while awaiting the parts for a trac-lok to install at a later date. It had maybe a quarter when it started to come out of the fill hole. Stupid me just plugged it and drove the rest of the season like that. It was evidently enough to keep things wet and not kaboom.

Rebuild it and be done. Lots of videos on youtube that go through the whole process. Parts kits are available from Rock Auto. If you have 2.75/1 gears it will be a gear change unless you can find a good set used.
