iI have a new heater control valve and hoses. Do I need the vacuum reservoir to make it work? I hear vacuum operate when I move the heater controls on the dash, but I don't know what goes where. I'm not looking to fix the a/c at this time.

Yeah, it needs a vacuum canister with a check valve. You can hide that thing anywhere, and use any kind you find. In late models car they are all plastic balls and hidden away.

Ok I'll look for one. I don't see any vacuum hose coming through the firewall so I need to check the HVAC controls as well. It would be nice to have some heat for the coming months.

Is this the stock kind for a 76? It goes on the driver side inner fender?

Or this one?

Depends. Sometimes you has cruise control tied into the vacuum for the vehicle as well.

You can use either can, I would just source fresh hose from a parts store though. I discovered on my '72 last year when swapping carbs all my vacuum hoses were dry rotted, which was one of my issues on my engine idle quality. Also affects brake pedal feel.

With the AC setup,  you need to run the coffee can to help keep the vacuum to the blend doors otherwise instead of dash vents, I think it defaults to the defrost vents.

Gotcha, thanks! No cruise on mine. I found a vacuum hose diagram somewhere but have to dig it up. I would like the a/c to work as well, and run on r134a or whatever they use these days, but that can wait until I park the car when snow and ice hit.

Converting over to 134A isn't terrible. Main thing is, I'd suggest updating to a Sanden compressor.

Here is a kit from Original Air.

Personally, I prefer Vintage Air's brackets as they more closely look OEM ford stock IF you are sticking with V belts.

I can only speak from experience with 351C engines however if you look through my build thread "17 year ban nap" there are details in there.

I went to a cycling compressor switch setup, eliminated the TSV Throttle Suction valve, built new hoses using new fittings.
That kit is the first time I have see replacement 180 degree bends made to fit the 72-79 intermediates.

It's also advisable to update the AC condenser by the radiator to a parallel flow condenser but I did make my original 134A conversion work with a stock Condenser.

There are a number of other considerations but it's all doable.
