Hey y'all, I just got a '73 Torino, currently no engine or transmission but I'm going to get a 460 and put a manual transmission behind it. Obviously I could go the Ford Top loader route but I'm curious, can you put a ZF5 in it? And what does it take? Like would it just be a custom cross member or are we talking about modifying the transmission tunnel and stuff? Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what it would take to get the ZF-5 to fit, I do know the case on the ZF-5 is bigger in diameter than the toploader. I had a ZF-5 in my 1995 Ford Bronco. I would not use this transmission as a performance transmission. 1st gear was too low, the 2-3 and 3-4 shift would grind when trying to speed shift. The ZF-5 in the Bronco is the medium duty version, and the example I had was well maintained. They made a heavy duty for the 460/Diesel. I'm sure that version shifts no faster and I would imagine that 1st is close to a granny gear, but I could be wrong as I have not had experience with that version. The toploader would be the better choice than the ZF-5, though if you do go the toploader route, find one that has already been rebuilt and in great shape. If I were you though, I would get a Tremec and be done. Two years ago had my toploader rebuilt by David Kee Toploaders, he did a great job, but I could have bought a 5/6 speed Tremec for what I spent on the rebuild plus shipping. Supply and demand on the Toploader stuff, there are only a few guys rebuilding them anymore.

I'm not super familiar with the ZF5, i think the shifter on those are in the middle of the main case, where the top loader is at the rear of the tail housing, but anything can be made to fit and work with $$. I would think putting one in your torino would cost the same (or more) as putting in anything else less the cost of the transmission, since you already have it.  You will be looking at any changes to the clutch pedals/equalizer bar or conversion to hydraulic; Wiring for lights, speedometer adjustments, yoke and u-joint changes, possibly mount point changes.

On the topic of the top loader though. I am converting mine to a 4 speed, and managed to get a set up including the top loader for a trade. But, it needed rebuild. I did this myself, without issue. I would go as far as to say that if you know how to assemble and engine, the top loader is a cake walk to build. I even live within driving distance of David Kee. I did source all my parts from him, as well as reached out to him for some information, but overall. It's not complicated.

The zf5 is tallllll, not to mention the funky shifter position and poor quality shifting. Even the tko 5 speed nicks the firewall/tunnel behind a 460 with factory mounts. Tremec just came out with the new version (thx or something like that), supposedly smaller and better in every way. Might want to consider that.
