    Posted: 11-March-2014 at 8:09PM
Hi everybody,

I'm finishing the rebuild of the new engine of my car, and am stuck into the project, finding a solution for the exhaust. Originally it was  a Mustang 1973 CJ 351 code Q.
I would like to have original cast manifolds, which I don't have (ref nr welcome), my original engine was a 2v Clevo.
I would really appreciate some advices. If headers is the best solution, I can go with that.
Thanks for your replies.

Unfortunately, I believe that the Q codes in 1974 had a single exhaust, unless I am mistaken. I have a '74 CJ engine sitting in my garage with the original manifolds, and a '72 original CJ exhaust system. Looks like they would interchange, but not sure.

Thanx for this info. But I'm suprised to read you. I've found informations saying it's dual on the torino. Maybe an option.
I'm thinking to let  it make custom, in stainless steel.
Now I've checked, the manifolds are different on 2V and 4V. I'm looking after a pair of 4v. If someone here can help. I would be grateful.

ALL Q codes were dual exhaust.  i do have a pair of 4v manifolds that are correct for your car.  the passenger side had two cracks which i had repaired.  they do need new studs.

Hmm. I knew '72 and '73 had the duals, but did not know that for the '74. Good info. I wonder how the tailpipes were run to exit below the large bumper and did the '74 have the crossover like the '72 version?

Sanderson shorty headers are an option, not sure which set is needed for a Torino?

pretty sure they will mix/match the left & rights to make a custom set

they dump down right behind the bumper.  I'll take a picture of the cougar when it gets back.  and yes, they use the same h-pipe.

Thanks for your proposal. But repaired cracked cast iron seems fragile to my eyes. Maybe I could go for that, temporary...
Could you please send me the part numbers of your manifolds?
Anyway, all your replies are more confusing to me. Opinions are so different. I would be happy to see a picture of an original Torino 351 CJ exhaust.
I'm pretty sure it was a dual.

to find a dual system in the Walker catalog you have to go to 1972-73

1974 only pulls up the base 2bbl single exhaust system

Dan, follow this link & you'll see the different systems by changing the years

http://www.walkerexhaust.com/catalog/walker-exhaust-systems/e-catalog-lookup

I would follow your own suggestion & have the system fabbed there in Stainless
especially if you choose anything other than factory manifolds

I will get casting numbers when I get home tonight.  As far as differences, here is what there is.
both 351c 4v rh and lh manifolds are the SAME for the following applications;
1971-1973 Mustang
1972-1974 torino/gran torino/montego/ranchero
1971-1974 cougar

This covers M and Q code engines.

1971 Boss 351 Mustang is the same configuration, the only difference is the outlet size is larger.

With the exception of the noted difference of the BOSS 351, ALL 4V passenger side manifolds are the same for all applications from 1970-1974.

Well, those informations are very useful.
I'm thinking going to find such original cast iron manifolds, and let making something in stainless steel.
If someone has a picture of such a system, it would certainly help.
Thanks for your replies.

Well it seems they have nothing...
Anyway I saw on the drawing, the pipes are only 2 1/4 inches in diam. That's quite small, isn't it? I was think in 2,5.

the sizes vary throughout the system depending upon where you're looking exactly

but these pipes would be some service replacement grade steel and would not last long IMO

I only meant it as a guide to what was there originally

there has been some talk on the forum here about using pre-fabbed kits for GM vehicles, Chevelles, Monte Carlos, but I'm not sure which body / year will work?

the connection to the factory manifolds would obviously be different from a Ford to a GM, but the basic system after the down-pipe can be used. this link is for 'header back' options, to remove that just click on the X to remove on the left side, or you can select other options down the row

Hi, you forgot to give the casting numbers... I found a pair in France. The parts should come from an early 70's Mach 1. Should be ok, then? My engine came from a 73 mustang...
Thanks for your help

The casting numbers should be:

DOAE 9431 G
and
DOAE 9430 G

They probably are the correct exhaust manifolds, but i have never seen a DOAE 9431 0, I have always seen the DOAE 9431 G casting numbers on the exhaust manifolds. They are probably the same though.

The casting numbers sound like they came from a 1970 M Code 351 4V Cleveland. These manifolds do fit the 1971-1974 351 4V Cleveland Q Code.

Well I'll wait a confirmation from the seller. He certainly make a bad reading. On the pictures they seems to be  the same as yours.

Many thanks.

Your welcome,
The DOAE 9430 G right side (passenger side) exhaust manifold, will fit your engine inside your 1974 torino.
The DOAE 9431 G left side (driver side) exhaust manifold will fit onto your engine perfectly, but I have just learned that the DOAE 9431 G left side (driver side) exhaust manifold will not fit into your torino, because it will touch the power steering box/gear. But i have never seen a DOAE 9431 O exhaust manifold, maybe it will be different?
You will have to find the correct part number for the drivers side exhaust manifold that will fit your 1974 torino. Here is a link of a person who had this same problem with the drivers side exhaust manifold.

The drivers side exhaust manifold that you need has the part number is D1ZE-9431-BA with the 2 inch exhaust exit port.

But this same part number (D1ZE-9431-BA) was also used on the driver side exhaust manifold on the 1971 Boss 351 cleveland 4V engine also, and the boss exhaust manifold has a 2-1/4 inch exhaust exit port.

You will have to find out more information from other people, to see if you can use the driver side boss 351 exhaust manifold on your engine. It will fit on your and engine and it will fit into your car, but it does have the larger exhaust port.

The Boss 351 D1ZE-9431-BA manifold with the 2-1/4 inch exhaust ports, will probably be much higher priced and harder to find anyway. So the D1ZE-9431-BA exhaust manifold that you will find for sale (for a reasonable price) will probably have a 2 inch exhaust port.

Here are three pictures of a D1ZE-9431-BA exhaust manifold, but i am not sure if this one has the 2 inch or 2-1/4 inch exhaust port.

You can find the DOAE-9430-G passenger side exhaust manifold and the D1ZE-9431-BA drivers side exhaust manifold (with the 2 inch exhaust port) from any:
1972-1974 torino, gran torino, montego or ranchero
1971-1973 mustang
1971-1974 cougar
That came with a 351 4V cobra jet Q code cleveland engine.

Thanks for those accurate informations, you save me much time, having fit the wrong manifold.
Would you have an idea where to find the good parts?
