Had this problem previously when the 351 was in the torino, but where does the positive wire to the coil go? And how many volts are put out to it? I can't try to start it now as I don't have an exaust system on it, but I would like to get it done

if i understand your question correctly - the positive wire to the coil goes to the + terminal of the coil the - terminal connects to the distributor , the positive wire runs to the ignition switch which has power when the key is in the on position (usually about 8 volts, 12volts when key is held in the start position)

Thanks a lot Johnny, you don't happen to know which wire on the switch it is do you?

Bryan,
We have a copy of the 73 Wire Diagram Manual (WDM) which will show you the wiring of the coil and ignition switch: |

If your car has electronic ignition than it will not have the +12V at start up, only the normal (the option was on points cars and was to help ignition on the weaker systems). The + wire for the coil is a resistance wire and that is what regulates the +12 to about +8 as californiajohnny has advised.

looking in the book and looking at my old column-- on the switch the row of terminals closest to the side with the mounting bolts (drivers side) it wound be the 2nd terminal up from the firewall end if you have the switch off and can look in at the terminals it's marked I1 (you could only see that with the wire connector plug off) the 3rd terminal up on the same side is the bypass (12volts at start) terminal. as far as the wire color i don't know, i would have to try and look under my dash. hope this helps

in looking at the schematic that scott just posted: it should be a red with a light green stripe (that does sound familiar for the ignition wire color and also shows you bypass circit wire color being brown with a pink stripe

So what I am looking for and all I need to know is that I need the red and green wire connected to the coil?

Ok I dug around this morning before leaving for school, and found the wire!! It was cut off underneath the high rise intake and tested it with the switch on and off and it works! So this wire kicks on 12 volts then constantly runs 8? And 8 is the right amount for this coil? I had a light tester, I will test the voltage when I get home.

Also the wire was red and green directly from the coil to a connector (right above the motor near the wiper motor) then in the connector it changes to a solid red wire that runs into the fire wall, from then on I am unsure, but that may just be on my chero, but I am pretty sure the wires are all stock.
