I was watching Jay Leno's video on his build of his '66 Galaxie 7 Litre. If you watch the video it shows custom tubular front upper control arms, a rack and pinion install and custom boxed lower control arms. Plus, a huge 1/ 3/8" front sway bar. All these parts were made by Hotchkiss suspension for Jay, and were supposed to be sold to the public, but as of today still aren't available.

http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/restoration-blog-1966-ford-galaxie-ultimate-edition/1267559/

The suspension stuff is around the 10 min mark if you don't want to watch the whole video.

Since these Ford's have virtually the same front suspension as our Torinos (I know the upper arms are the same part numbers for early 1972's), it's too bad Hotchkiss didn't make these parts as we might have been able to make them work for our cars. But since it's not a Mustang, a Mopar or Chevy, I guess Hotchkiss doesn't care.

The arms are suspposed to help improve front end geometry. I am not sure where he source the steering rack, but I bet that same once could be made to work on the Torino frame. He does a nice brake upgrade too.

Still a neat video to watch, sweet car that Jay built.

very nice video.. gets me thinking I gota stop being lazy.  I have all the stuff I need to design suspension like that.   All I got to do is take measurements and lay it all out in Solidworks. Run an FEA on the existing piece and I can mess with geometry and whatever I want after everything is plugged in. Make it more ridged and all kinds off stuff. That's probably all Hotchkis does. I mean beside CNC bend tube and cut plate and fab the pieces up. That video exposes a lot!! they mention plate sizes and tubing wall sizes and OD's. Even that could be a good start. I can fab anything, it's the design that I don't totally trust myself with, but I am starting to trust myself more and more. Damnitt this might be the motivation I need.

Also hotchkis has the sway bar on their sight and I bet you it fits the GTS..  Maybe I will call them and see if they can send me one to try and see if it fits, if it did, I might consider buying it. I am due for a sway bar upgrade anyways. I mean they would be able to add at lot of cars to that list if it did.  The curb weight I can find online for the 66 Galexy with the FE motor is 3900ish lbs. Puts it right there with a 385 series 72-76 torino. Maybe a little over-kill but totally worth a shot, probably would shave 25lbs off the nose compared to the stock bar. Actually come to think of it. That leno car is probably right there too. Considering the AC and all the chassis stiffening.

Jay Leno is a great story teller to. A real showman. Just goes to show you why he is so famous.

I forgot to mention they do have the sway bar listed, but I am not sure if it would fit our cars. I don't really need a bigger bar though, my car is pretty flat with the CVPI springs and the 1 1/8" bar. I noticed the frame mounts on the Galaxie are different than our cars. I think the suspension geometry improvement and the stronger than stock parts would be the best improvement for handling.

I'd just like to see more aftermarket support for Fords other than Mustangs...

72FordGTS, Thanks for posting that link. I loved watching the upgrades done to one of my most favorite yr. Galaxies, 1964 being #1. I'm hoping Hotchkis does bring those pieces to market for our Torinos. Brian

There is a guy here parting out a '65 Galaxie. Selling the frame with 9 inch and suspension as a whole. Already off the body. I have heard that early NASCAR used the front suspension off the '65-'66 cars for racing. Is it worth getting and will anything work on our cars?

So I got my response:

That's all they said, so I am assuming it's not going into production.

There really isn't much different from our cars. You could get the upper control arms as spares, but they will have the small bushings. The lowers are different, but not sure how much. It'd be interesting to compare them side by side, they look very similar. Looks like from the Ford parts catalog, the strut rods are also slightly different in length. For 1972 they should be 27 1/4".

http://www.hotchkis.net/19651966_galaxie_front_sport_sway_bar.html

so that's the link to the hotchkis site.. I bet that sway bar will fit the 72+ torino but I don't know

After that reply from hotchkis, I don't think I would give them my business. They didn't seem very eager to help and expand their client base...  Just sayin'

I believe that our cars have a longer caster/camber adjusting slot than the earlier '66 cars did but not positive at this point. I will look into alignment specs and rates for our car tomorrow. Note that the problem came about mostly because of the conversion to a rack & pinion steering gear which requires much more caster (manufacturer stated at least 3 degrees) due to the highly sensitive nature of them compared to the old worm & sector steering boxes originally in these cars.
I do however really like that upper control arm. The lower one really isn't all that much better than just boxing our existing ones IF you really feel the need to do so. Many have done just that and it is one of the recomendations in the Ranchero handbook.

As for the reply from Hochkis, I'm not really surprised and in a way can't fault them. When you have a multi-millionare car guy like Leno who money-is-no-object, a buisness looks upon a request  like his as a buisness venture to get there name out there on a very prominent show. There are much bigger fish in the car market than us with 40+ year old cars in dwindling numbers. I agree that they should not have said those items were going into production on the show. THAt was a misleading statement.

Ian,

I think you are right about the camber/caster slots. When I had my car aligned this year I easily had around 3- 4 degrees caster, and there was still plently of movement left in the slots. It sounds like from Jay's video they could only get 1 degree of Caster with the stock arms.

I am just diasppointed because they said in the video they were going to make the parts. Really, all the R&D was done, it was just a matter of reproducing those arms, but obviously they figure there isn't enough of a market.
