Edelbrock intake manifold water pump bypass nipple

Pulling the water pump off the 460 Saturday as I was trying to break free the bypass hose from the water pump nipple the hose released from the pump nipple just before the manifold nipple began spinning in the intake manifold, so once I have the pump outta the way, I was able to also slide the nipple out of the manifold easily.Ouch



Is there a trick to resealing/reseating the nipple into the Edelbrock Performer 460 manifold so I won't have to worry about this issue again??

If the njpple to intake manifold isn't too loose of a fit, I'd clean the manifold and the water bypass sleeve really good then re-install into manifold using Permatex sleeve retainer. I've used this sleeve retainer on 4x4 wheel bearing hubs when the races spun within the hubs. Hope this helps

Went over to the shop this past weekend and found the intake manifold bypass nipple and got it cleaned up. Once it was cleaned, it was obvious it was stepped down on one end. 



The smaller end just does fit into the intake manifold port but the larger end does not. The small end has ever so slight friction with the manifold so my question is should I apply a light coat of the Permatex Sleeve Retainer to the inside of the intake port as well as the nipple prior to mating the two pieces together.

Since it would be such a PITA to replace/reseal once the engine is buttoned up again I was to hedge my bet by seeking expert advice! Wink

If installing this tube with sleeve retainer has you spooked, maybe another option is getting a brass or stainless fitting with 5/8" barbed fitting on one end, threads on the other end and use a tap to cut threads into the intake's water bypass tube location. At least you could then thread/unthread the fitting if needed.

Threading the port isn't a bad idea. With that pressed in, I don't know how you pulled it out.

Sleeve retainer is good stuff. I've used it on freeze plugs and injector sleeves on diesels. Use the activator spray with it and let it cure before use and I've never had a problem, so long as the clearances aren't too big. You can apply it to the port and the manifold if you want, it's anaerobic, so you can't really overdo it, as it's not going to harden and cause issues except between the plug and manifold.

They do make another product for larger gaps that I've used successfully as well. If you feel drag while spinning it, it's probably not needed.
