    Posted: 29-May-2017 at 11:46PM
Hi Everybody.

I have a 1976 Gran Torino I have owned for the past 30 years.
It original had a 351 Cleveland with a C6 with an original floor shifter.
When I bought the car, 30 years ago, I pulled the 351 Cleveland and transmission and installed a 1971 429 Thunder-Jet and C6 transmission.

I have the floor shifter hooked up to the shaft of the transmission, but there is no hookup onto the transmission shaft for the cable that locks the transmission into park when the steering wheel is locked after I take out the key...

My question is this:
In order to hook up the steering column lockout cable to the shaft of the transmission, do I need to change the shaft in the transmission OR add a bracket onto the shaft of this transmission?

I hope I worded this properly for everyone to understand.
Please, let me know.

Thank you,
Guy

If you are using the 71 transmission, and it is a floor shift transmission, it may not have the spot for the interlock cable on the bracket/lever. The interlock was a 70s thing, and don't know when it was required.
Difficulty with making the interlock work on tilt columns is why they stopped floor shifts with tilt wheels in the torinos.

If I remember correctly, I pulled the original steering column out and rebuilt it with parts from another tilt wheel column and made my original steering column into a tilt wheel.
At the time, I remember thinking, I didn't want to eliminate the cable lock system.

guy, yeah we'll have to do that  soon.Wink i think this lockout can be done with the right combination of parts? i'm thinking you would need a double ended tranny shift bracket of some kind...

Does it run off the trans lever or out of the shifter for torino?

Big Bird.
I may not be understanding your question.
The 76 Gran Torino is a floor shift car and shifts with the floor shifter.
However, my car also has a lockout system that locks the steering
Wheel when you remove the key.
But It also has a cable that runs from the steering column
to the transmission shaft so when the key is in the lock position
The shifter is locked in the park position.

My 78 Firebird Formula had the same kind of anti theft system as my 76 Torino.

That's what I was wondering.
Since I pulled the 1976 Torino's 351 Cleveland motor and transmission out 30 years ago and installed the 1971 429 Thunder-Jet and C6 Transmission from a column shift
Station wagon, I'm wondering if I need to change the bracket or the whole shaft
for a floor shift car.
I didn't take any pictures of the transmission bracket and shaft at the time so I don't know
if they are different from column shift vs floor shift.
If anybody has pictures of the difference, that would be greatly appreciated.

Some manufacturers/cars with a floor shift option use a cable off the shifter to operate the interlock, some use a cable from the lever on the trans. I thought Ford used the cable off the trans lever, but not really  as most of the floorshift Fords I've dissected were pre-interlock and had nothing.
I have a Ford floorshifter sitting on my workbench with no linkages (torino) and it's rod-actuated, some other Fords used a similar shifter with a cable actuation.
My buddy's 1988 Monte Carlo SS used a floor shifter and had a separate cable, but the column shift cable was still used as well for the interlock and the collar on the column moved with the floor shifter.
