Can anyone tell me if an FMX off of a 1973 351c will bolt onto a 1971 400? if not, can I change the bell housing on the FMX to make it fit?...thanks

351C comes with the same smaller bell pattern as the 289, 302 / 5.0 and 351W. the 400 comes with the same larger bell pattern as the 429 and 460, unless you happen to have one of the very hard to find 'FMX 400' blocks that came with a small bell pattern cast into the block and machined to accept a small bell pattern transmission. the good news is the FMX transmission does use a separate bell so you can change it for use on the large bell pattern engines. the bad news is any FMX bell housings may be getting hard to find?
here you can see the unmachined large bell pattern and the machines small bell pattern of the FMX 400 block ![]() even more rare is the 'Reverse FMX 400' block, provisions for both bell patterns are cast in but the large pattern is machined. doubtful anybody would ever know they had this block under the hood unless they dropped the transmission out and got their peepers in there ![]() |

Hey! thank you for the quick reply! The 1971 400 that I'm thinking on buying(easier/quicker than rebuilding the 351c thats in the car) comes with a trans, can I bolt my FMX onto that bell housing? it looks like it probably would, but I dont want to buy and find out I cant...thank you

Interesting, those look like the small and big bolt patterns almost share the bottom four holes. Not quite but I hadn't seen the two together before. Below is the only picture I have of the odd small block patterned 400(with a Tremec). Note the gap you could feel easily by reaching down to the top of the bell housing while its attached; ![]() |

none of the holes or alignment pins coincide, word is that there's not enough meat in the casting to drill / tap the large pattern into the small pattern block i'm not sure if the large pattern block can be converted to the small pattern. if the engine you're getting has a large pattern FMX bell on it then you should be able to swap that bell onto your transmission but i can't guarantee the torque converters are the same, and i'll say the flex plates are probably different but swappable. starters i also do not know

Yes, go slow on that process of putting the block and trans together. Be sure the torque convertor is fully seated in the trans, and will slide fore and aft when the block is seated. The TC must move back easily before the TC nuts or bolts are seated. That way the TC is not pushing forward on the crank at all, which will wipe out the thrust bearing if it does push forward.

As an aside, I asked TMeyer to add the second bolt pattern to his blocks. It would open up a whole new customer base.
