Topic: Hood Scoop TemplatePosted: 06-July-2019 at 1:41AM |
|
Does anyone have, or know how to obtain a template for the non functional hood scoop for the 68 - 69 Torinos? If that's not available, are there dimensions that can be used instead? I just picked up a complete OEM unit with lights and would like to install it on my 68.
Thanks in advance..

the 68-69 scoop is non-functional anyway, even with the holes cut out. I have saved the center section of my old scooped hood so I can trace the actual holes for you. Send me a private message to remind me as I am away from home for a week.
(Non-functional as in “ no flaps to open/moveable parts/etc.....”. It is “functional” in that turn-signal indicators are in it and blink with the L and R signals) Dave Fox

I believe I have found the correct template for this application. The seller does not indicate the vehicle type, but the template is a perfect match for my oem non functional scoop.. Purchased it and will update you on how things work out..

that just shows you the bolt holes and the turnsignal holes.... it does not show you the 4-hole oval. The oval is there regardless of whether it is a "functional" scoop or not.....

Hogfiddles.. You are correct. I was searching on line and actually saw the 4 large holes in the hood. I'm not going to cut those out. My hood is original and fits perfectly, so the mounting holes and small bulb access holes will do for now.. Thanks for the update.. Good catch..

ok, cool. If you do decide to make the rest of the cutouts, let me know. I saved the center of my old hood, so I can always trace the EXACT shapes

I'll be at the body shop tomorrow making the cutouts. Again, I can't thank you enough.

Mock things up first before you drill and cut, just to double-check…….. It should be right, cuz that’s the pattern, but if anything seems off, I’ll do a tracking impression of the actual hood openings themselves since I saved that hood section.

Thanks guys! I went to the body shop and marked all the cutouts onto the hood. The bolt pattern for the aftermaket scoop is a little off on one side vs the other, but will be okay.
I'll probably go over one night this week and cut them out; still contemplating doing the four cutouts to make the scoop functional?

If you cut out the four holes to make the oval, don’t cut out the center ‘cross’. The four factory holes make the oval with the cris-cross in the center.
![]() Again, if you need to see a pic of the actual piece from my hood, I can take one, too.

I'm glad you posted that pic though, I didn't know that there were reliefs cut into the brace. Thanks again, Joe

Keep in mind, if you decide not to cut the holes the scoop will hold any dirt/crud and hold moisture and eventually rot as it is what mother nature likes to do.

Just got this ram air Cobra in October. Took the Scoop off and the previous pic shows what I found. I guess some previous owner cut the cross section out.

FWIW if you have no need i'd recommend not cutting the hole open to allow weather into the engine compartment and seal the bulb hole areas completely. unless you treat the car as a Roadster (convertible with no top), with the hole open eventually your air filter housing and engine bay will look like that of a car in the junk yard. been there done that. is there enough of an edge surface to seal the perimeter of the scoop to hood to prevent vibration from wearing the paint?

The GT scoop on all but ram air cars should have a seal behind the small grille to keep the elements from getting in there.
I believe the Ram Air cars had the 'cross' between the pie shaped holes cut out at the factory to allow for air cleaner flapper clearance.

Correct…..but the fiber-y flat seal gets hard and dried out over the years. I think mine is still sort-of there

If it has the block off plate and you don't want to cut the hood, you could seal the seams well to the hood, with Ultra Black RTV. It doesn't take much to seal, put a decent bead along the inner perimeter, wipe the outside well with a prep solvent, and seal the block off plate easily from inside.
