So as part of my rat problem on the 73 fastback, I had the seat belts sitting in a box, which now also has some %*^(& which has made it "contaminated".

Since black seat belts and bleach don't mix well, I wanted to explore my options before I did anything.

Everything else is of course cleaned up, I just left the box of seat belts outside due to my indecisiveness.

On my 71 F-250 I purchased some third party replacement seat belts (nice 3-point seatbelts), but am hesitant to do the same on the Torino. With the pickup, I was able to make a nice 3 point seat belt system (it just had lap belts), which was a HUGE safety improvement.

What are other's experiences? Are there good replacements? Are there folks that rebuild Torino seat belt sets?

I bought a 3 point system for my car mainly for the safety aspect and the fact it has an enertia system so you lean foward if you have to reach for something on the dash. Unlike the stock system that is just a choke strap. lol!

Snake-oil (I believe thats the wrong spelling).. Was the main choice of guys on the mustang websites.. When I had my 69 mustang it was them I was told to use.. They take your originals and redo them.. Not there on the torino so I can't vouch for there work..
My dad told me 2 things.. Always drive FORDS and never marry women with names like CHERRY,PEACHES and LEMON

Hey tjbooker, about what does it cost for Sharon to do those (sharonswebinc.com for those of you who didn't google it)?

I'd have two shoulder belts for the outboard front, 2 retractable lap belts for the outboard rear, and two standard lap belts, one front, one rear, plain black.

You think she can do a color change, get me BLUE belts?

I saw a 1975 Cougar seat belt set on the Sharon's website. Looked very encouraging. I think I would seriously consider her for my 75 Torino, however for the 73, I tend to lean more toward the company I bought seat belts from for my 71 F-250:

Seat Belt Pros
http://www.seatbeltpros.com/

They had a good product.

What really makes me concerned regarding the 73, is getting a sensible 3-point belt system in there. Yes, the 73 has the shoulder belt separate that you click in, but I have always thought that was kind of hokey - sort of like the early 90's cars that has the travelling shoulder belt when you open/closed the doors. I think that was the king of hokey.

But seriously, Seat Belt Pros makes a 3-point kit that would fit rather nicely I think into the Torino.

Unless someone was able to get the newer style seat belts (74-up) to fit a 73, but the mount holes are different (the mount in the floor has two as opposed to one hole, and the shoulder belt mount is farther forward on newer cars).

SHARON'S WEB CAN REPLACE WEBBING IN THE COLORS YOU WANT. YOU CAN GO BLACK TO BLUE OR WHTEVER.  THEY ARE MUCH CHEAPER THAN SNAKE OYL, WITH THE SAME QUALITY.
BUT  REPLACEMENT BELTS ARE PROBABLY CHEAPER

I was looking at the 74-78 3 point harness found in Torinos, LTDs, Cougars as well.  Almost a slam dunk mod if the mounting point wasn't different than my 1973 Torino.

I can't seem to find a good setup either...This is an old thread hope some discussion picks up on it.

The biggest issue with putting a replacement set into a 72/73 is the location of the upper shoulder harness is farther back.

If you put a three-point harness in a 72/73, it would make for a mess getting into the back seat I would think, but the benefits outweigh the negatives in my opinion.

Anyone look at seats with the harness within the seat?
An OEM seat with the belt retractor in the seat may be the only option without welding brackets.

Know of any cars with this restraint.   Maybe convertibles from Chrysler?

Anyone weld in 74 mounts to convert to 3 point harness?
Sounds like...just live with the 2point harness or go with a rollbar with a 4point.

I am wondering if I can mount the shoulder strap to the body at the B-Pillar area.
Thinking in this area...

Thats an interesting idea...

There is enough room in there for the retracting mechanism.  I was just at a bone yard looking at crown vics.  I bet the belts from a crown vic can be adapted.   I have my interior pulled apart.  I tried to link some pics without success.   I add some pics of the cavity soon.

The other I idea I had was get the seat belt kit from
These belts have the drop down hangar for high 3pt mounts.  Mount the retractor using a mounting plate behind the floor pan rail just under the upper mount location.  the problem with this is that its in the way and an eye sore.

Thinking for me was mount a retractor on the floor in stock location with the solid mount inside the circled area. The idea for me is to keep the wide open appearance on the side of the car, no B-Pillar or anything else interupting the open flow look of the car.

Yeah.  Shame to waste perfectly good seat belts because of a little rat crap! Confused
Additionally, and GOOD, thorough cleaning with HOT water and soap should really to the trick of disinfecting the belts.  I say keep 'em original, if possible.
I salvaged a very nice set of ginger  colored belts from my donor car that had cat pee all over them, and they cleaned up NICELY after soaking for a few hours- a few times-  over a couple of, uhh days  LOL

I'd be a little concerned about the cat pee.  I had mice in my LTD II and they peeed al over the carpeting.  I pulled the carpet out to clean it.  When I hosed it off the carpet just disintegrated.  I'm not sure why but wherever it was obvious that they ha peed the carpet just fell apart.
