Assuming you have a 429 with a auto transmission Crites also offers headers but with 2" primary tubes compared to the Hooker 1 7/8" for a little better high RPM breathing. http://www.critesrestoration.com/fairlane.htm

I think 2 tubes on the Crites headers go under the front control arms like their older car headers. If you have the front of the car low the Crites may be a little bad for ground clearance. (I haven't actually seen a set in place in person though)

I was looking for a set of 429 headers for my 72 GTS as well. Just talked to the guys at Crites and the current line of headers do NOT go under the control arm

Eric, if you buy the Crites headers post some pictures and let us know how well the install went. When my headers rot out I'd like to build custom stainless headers starting with SPD Flanges and 2" primary tubes. I just had my Hooker headers ceramic coated so I won't be doing that for a while. http://www.spdexhaust.com/Ford_B.html#

I heard that FPA makes headers that will fit the 429/460 in the 72-76 Torino chasis, but aren't currently on his site. Most of his stuff is 1 3/4" primary so its not for all out race applications, but if fits good and is well built. The other downside is they are pricey.

Here is a photo of the headers as they arrived.
It will be a while before I will be installing them. I do plan on having them ceramic coated but what to test fit them first.

I'm running the Hooker 6126 headers, only thing available at the time I did the 460. I am very pleasantly surprised, besides the slotted flanges, Those Crites pieces look nice, and they are an unequal length 2" tube 3.5" collector, right? how do the flanges line up with a CJ sized gasket?
The HKR's are equal length, 1 7/8 and 3" collector. They work ok at 600hp, but are prolly on the small side. Their flanges are pass car port but will match the CJ heads with some grinding.
Thanks for the pics!! Jim

You are correct that they are unequal 2" and 3.5" collector. I also received the flange taking them to 2.5"exhaust. Gasket match appears to be good with no overlap into the port area. I will be getting my heads back next week after rework including some light porting so we will really see.
The only area I am concerned about is clearance to the A/C housing as it looks a little tight and I will not know until the install.

Eric, I'm curious to know where in your exhaust system you plan to reduce the pipe size from 3.5" to 2.5"? The key is to keep your pipe size the same from the collectors all the way to the back if possible, any pipe size reduction should only be done after the mufflers.
Question about the Crites headers, is the side that contacts the heads perfectly flat? I tried to use pure copper CJ exhaust gaskets with my hookers without mods and they wouldn't seal. The flanges on my headers has this welded bead around each port that sticks out. I gather that I'll have to grind the flanges perfectly flat so the copper will seal properly, another winter project.
Jim, was there sufficient material to grind the Hooker flange ports to CJ size?

The flanges are ground flat on the Crites.
I had planned on reducing at the headers to make plumbing it out a little easier. Guess I should check the cost difference to pipe it with at least 3" and 3.5". A little concerned about the cost but guess I will just have to convince the wife it is another birthday present...

I had to modify my transmission X-mount so the pipes go straight back from the header collectors. My 3.5" exhaust pipes feed into a 3.5" In/Out X-pipe right behind the transmission. The goal is to keep exhaust pipes straight from front to back, any necessary bends (over axle) should be mandrel.

There is material to get a decent match but you are talking about a very quick transition to a smaller size and weakening the weld a good bit. The worst thing about the HKRS is the bolt holes are a bear and should be checked against the heads BEFORE having everything in the car. I've had 2 sets and both fit different. The one piece flange is not forgiving so some time with a rat tail file is important.
I'd like to take the Crites pieces and use them with a custom CJ flange, that looks like it'd work excellent.. Can't wait to see them installed on a car to see how they clear the suspension and such..

The bolt holes on the Hookers are a pain to work on, even after I enlarged the holes with a file I still have trouble getting them to line up. My collectors would leak all the time so I had a muffler shop cut them off and weld on a set of ball & socket connectors, I never run open headers anyway.

After I started combining the aluminum gaskets with a coating of red RTV, I don't have collector leaks at all any more.. .. I also use regular gaskets plus RTV at the head as well and check the bolts often as well...

I coated my Hooker headers prior too. During the cam break in period, they glowed red hot and some of the ceramic coating close to the heads cracked and peeled after. The luster finish turned to a flat grey almost the total length of the primary pipes. It would greatly help to have your timing and fuel set properly before start up to avoid molten header syndrome.

UPDATE on the Crites Headers.....sadley enough.
I thought I was ahead of schedule but ran into a snag with the 429 Crites headers in my 72 N code.
The design is making it what appears to be impossible to use them in a car without a console or floor shift!
The shifter cable path and bracket do not seem to allow use in a column shift set up...yuch!
I am going to keep playing with it but does not look good.

Tom,
I may be if I cannot get these to work over the next few days.
What do you need to get out of them? No big thing to get them stripped and ceramic coated at my local guy and usually runs around $120
